No DVD Please insert map DVD

After disconnecting the battery on my 2011 Toyota Camry XLE for an alternator repair, my sound system screen reads as follows: No DVD Please insert map DVD.

The problem I am having is that even if I had a map DVD, I cannot even open the unit to access the DVD drive.

Any ideas on how I can get the thing open? I have tried disconnecting the battery and hitting the Eject button or pressing and holding the button, but nothing seems to open the unit so I can access the DVD drive.

Attached is a photo.

I've read in a couple of post elsewhere that the battery positive needs to be removed for at least 30 minutes for the nav system to reset. I would think the battery was disconnected that long to do the alternator job. Another poster said they got the dvd door to open by repeatedly pushing the open button immediately after starting the car but it took several tries.

Does it sound like the unit is even attempting to lower, like some sort of whine or other sound?

At any rate, if the course of action is to repair/replace, seriously consider just upgrading with a newer head unit that is powered by your phone. The car will accept the upgrade, it'll be lightyears ahead of the factory system, and my spidey senses tell me that the cost of fixing the factory unit vs. upgrading are probably within spitting distance.

Unfortunately, it does not sound like it is trying to eject at all. The unit makes some sounds like it's trying to play something when I start up the car but when I press eject, there is no response. I was hoping there would be way to eject manually. I have priced out a replacement from Best Buy and we are looking at $400-$500 installed for a Kenwood that just has basic Bluetooth and USB functionality.

Well if that doesn't take the cake... I pried on the unit with a putty knife and the unit has started to respond to the eject button! However, I am unsure if there is a disc inside. Does anyone know how to tell if the disc is just bad or if there is a disk inside? Maybe just try inserting a blank DVD?

Yea, that unfortunately seems right, especially if you have JBL and wish to retain the factory amp which you really should do for various reasons. Although, I do sort of question if I really needed the steering wheel control module for the Sony unit I got from them. But, it also did simplify the install process with the ready harness service so it was worth it just for the ease...

Other things to consider are:
  • Do you have a built-in back-up camera, and if so does it display through your factory car stereo?
    • If the back up camera goes through your factory stereo, you'll need a way to plug in the factory unit without having to reroute a new one, if the install kit doesn't account for it. But I've seen other websites that'll sell plug and play adapters for a backup camera. If the backup camera goes to your rear view mirror, then you have nothing to worry about.
  • Depending on the head unit, you may have to either splice one wire into the parking brake wire that tells the care if the brake is engaged or not. Or, you can go my route and just install a bypass (readily available on Amazon) that's easy, but does require splicing into the wiring harness you'll get from Crutchfield.
  • I noticed the USB warning from your picture, which I am guessing is pretty much saying if your factory USB is not USB 3.0 (which I doubt is the case), that you may not be able to use carplay and such.
    • Sounded like you weren't too keen on that anyway, but I will say it's car-changing lol. If the head unit supports wireless car play/android auto then you probably don't need to worry. Otherwise, you can just grab a USB patch cable (I can grab a link later) that has a very factory appearance and would plug right into the back of the head unit.
Hopefully I didn't scare you :)

May need one for updates only, not one in there full time to read from.
Honestly don't know.

Ty it was working fine until I reinjected it. So I took negative post off. I'll find out in the morning, 🤔
