OEM Remote Starter Will Not Activate @ Dealership

I bought a brand new VIP remote starter for my 2009 LE Camry from a guy on the forums, took it to a Toyota Dealership in Seattle WA. They have had my car for 5 days now and have been unable to get the remote starter activated. It is installed properly (or so they say), they are refusing to do anymore work until I can show them a proof of purchase from Toyota and I cannot get a hold of the seller to get his receipt from Toyota. The dealership is now refusing to help without the receipt and refuses to refund my installation cost that specifically says on paper I was paying for a remote starter installation and activation of the system.

Is there anyone that can help me troubleshoot the issue, get it RMA'ed or know some higher ups at Toyota or a helpful dealership?

Glad I didn't get it. Looks like either connection somewhere is incorrect or u got a bad one. Did u try checking the wiring ur self or have a friend who does aftermarket ones check it out.

It sounds as if your only recourse is to the guy who sold it to you. Sure it was new? Unused? If the guy was a dealer employee he should be able to produce some paper. If you can't him to respond now, then maybe he knows something. This is a good lesson for buying stuff like this from a dealer. If you can't prove the source of the product was actually Toyota, then they should have no obligation. Check the part number. It might work just fine on another model.

which dealership did you go to in seattle? you might be SOL if you cant reach the person you bought it from.

To Pawel: Nope, that's why I let toyota of Seattle do it. Other car work yes I will do but not too much into electrical on it.

Gdanaher: Yes, it was new according to them, he is here on the forums, but has not responded. When I went to the dealership for the first time they said it doesn't matter where I got the part from as long as it was Toyota part they would install it. When I told the dealership I was willing to buy another starter and have them install it, they said I need to pay full price again and refuse to do it at no additional charge, asked for a refund, they refused to provide a refund even though I showed them their paperwork saying they will charge me XXX for "remote starter installation AND ACTIVATION".

PT398-03110 is what it says on the box.

Edit: (UPDATE) I finally heard back from the seller, he will try to get me the information and hopefully Toyota of Seattle can get it's act together. I don't know why they need an invoice as they have the part and can see its under warranty.

The dealer cannot parts warranty the RES kit without the original receipt. With the receipt, the dealership will order another kit, install it and get paid by Toyota through a parts warranty. PT398-03110 is the correct superseded part number for the earlier 07-10 RES kit.

Well, my accessories documents only show that part number for 2007-2010 Camry with or without smart key. This is straight from TIS.
Can the Toyota parts man chime in here?

Google says PT398-03110 replaced 08586-3T950 but then again I don't work for Toyota so if they know that would be helpful. I still don't get why Toyota of Seattle refuses to help without proof of purchase from a dealership after not requiring that at first.

I goggled that too. My issue date of that doc was 06-08-09 so probably outdated.
Wish I could help more. Each dealer is different from one another. I guess it all depends on who, what, and where.
I see the "hood switch" was an extra part needed for this kit. Do you know if it was wired up correctly with this? You may want to ask them that.

The hood switch I did myself, I did a continuity test on the hood switch when I did the install. The switch is on there correctly, circuit completes when hood is down, circuit doesn't when opened.

Go PM Gary (TOYOPARTSMAN), he is a parts manager for Toyota of Newnan and knows his stuff and he should be able to help you.

PT398-03110 installed my '11 hybrid and works fine.

Agree with mjz... Wouldn't be surprised if dealer messed up somewhere along the line. Although it's very strange the seller disappeared.

I got the invoice from the seller and dropped it off to the dealership in the morning, now the dealership won't return my 3 calls today (after they keep promising to call me back within an hour of each call). Waiting to hear back from them on what they are going to do.

Yea but they want nearly double what this dealership already charged my credit card. Don't really want to pay again as they refuse to refund me. I just hate their customer service, they promise to call back and do not, I always have to walk into the dealership. I have two cell phones (work/personal) , only times they picked up is when I used my other cell (screening my caller id?) and now pick up neither when I call.

My concern for not going aftermarket was engine immobilizer as I do not want that bypassed/disabled.

#22 ·
sounds like an installation issue.. i had the same problem when i installed my remote start.. how far into the initialization does it go? it could be 1 of 2 things, they either didnt tap that one red wire properly or if someone was messing around with the body ecu and turned the security feature on it wont let the remote start initialize..

Let me know if you have any other questions.. Im an ASM for a toyota dealer and used to be a tech

#24 ·
They wouldn't tell me, or let me speak to the master tech doing the install. What security feature on the ECU would that be and would (should) they be competent enough to fix it?

#25 ·
i would file a claim with your credit card company since you paid them twice and nothing happend/ fixed. You can also file a complaint to the BBB. As someone already said you could of gotten an aftermarket alarm system with remote start for around $350-400 installed with an immobilizer bypass, you dont loose it just bypasses it when you use the alarm system to start your car instead of a key.

#26 ·
i myself went through those procedures... if you go into the vehicle diagnostics, then utility, then its called customization... in that feature you would see the security option... in there it would say whether or not it is activated or not. if it is activated it wont let you initialize the remote start..

Awesome thank you, I will go talk to them tomorrow morning as they still haven't returned my calls, I called them this morning and they said they are still looking into the parts which I have no idea what for.

If they can't get their act together, I will attempt to activate it next weekend (finishing my other camry this weekend) and I will let you know where it fails at.

^Or mention a lawyer. That's all you have to do usually and they'll shut up and do their job. I'm not saying to sue the crap out of people, but when dealers or other businesses are treating you unfairly, it's not a half bad idea.
