Opening Windows with Engine Off

I have a 2016 HL XLE and I often will wait for my wife outside a store with the engine off. Is the only way to open the windows is to start the car up, then shut it back down? It seems kind of dumb to not be able to open windows unless the HL is running. Dumb question but thought I would ask.

In the past ~15 - 20 years or so ACCESSORIES setting as Kiseliok mentioned on most car makes will tap the battery to get the electronics working.
Also you can open/close front windows if you are outside the car by using the key and turning it in the lock, left to close and right to open....errr or vise versa/? Not sure if this has a time limit after car is off.

It is a very good and important question, if you don't know it.

Kiseliok, Shazaam Batman it works! I guess I missed that somewhere in the 3, 4, or 500 pages of manuals. I would have asked my salesman but he no longer works at the dealer. Thanks again.

I've got another question about my tailgate but I won'd ask two dumb questions in the same day.

Dumb question #2 for the day

Ok, "Hikariknight" goaded me into this.

Question #2. I know you guys are going to think I spend a lot of time waiting on my wife in a store, but I do.

I can be sitting in the HL with the radio on and after say 30 minutes or so, my wife walks up with her groceries to the tailgate and pushes the button to open it but the tailgate won't open. At that point I push my dash button to open the tailgate from the inside and it still won't open. I then end up getting out and either opening the tailgate window or playing with the outside button awhile and it'll finally open. If I try to open the tailgate at any other time I don't seem to have a problem, just when I have been sitting in it for awhile, neither the inside or outside button will open it. Ideas?

Now I feel better!

I bet it's because your doors are locked. It won't open until you unlock the doors since you have the key in the car with you.

Rockett 1021 I'll try that and make sure the doors are all unlocked. Makes sense now that you mention it.

2017Highlander. That would have been question #3 because a couple of times it has shut the radio off after 20 min. I think possibly a warning comes on the screen at the same time. I figured there was a timer somewhere that had to be set.

As Rockett mentioned, make sure the doors are unlocked while you are in the car.
Also, hold the dash gate button down for a couple of seconds. It never works for me if I simply press it once. Maybe a safety feature? But unlike windows, it doesn't require ACC.

For the windows and sunroof if you have one, you can have the car programed to open all of the windows and the roof without having the engine on by using your key fob. I just had the dealer set those settings on my 2017 Limited after I read about it in the owners manual.

Only a dealer with the equipment or I think some of the aftermarket devices and programs talked about on the forum can do it. There was no charge for me because I asked the salesman if there were any special settings which could only be done by the dealership at the time I picked it up. I also had the lane change flash count increased from 3 to 6 at the same time.
