Other Totota Engine Q's?

Don't flame me! I've already posted this on the RAV4 forum, but found that those folks aren't nearly as knowledgeable or helpful as you guys are consistently.
My wife wants a new RAV4 because we're retiring her Accord with 340,000 trouble-free miles on it. I'm trying to decide between the 4 and the 6.
Are the 2.4L 4 cyl and the 3.5L 6 cyl both newly designed engines?
Do either have a proven track record?
Is the 4 cyl enough for the new, larger Rav4?
Toyota claims the mpg for each to be surprisingly similar. Does this hold up in the real world?
Thanks a lot for your help.

The 3.5 has been used in the Avalon for almost a year now, I hear its smooth and powerful and if you stay out of the throttle gas mileage isnt bad. The 2.4 has been around awhile longer and gas mileage probley isnt much better than the 3.5. Iam partical to the V6, gasmileage is close and power is far better.

Don't know if this helps or not - the 3.5 is based off the 4.0 in the Tacoma. The 3.5 has been the Avalon for over a year now and the 4.0 is on it's 3rd year in the 4 Runner. I like the V6 power. The question is what will you use it for? The V6 will give you some towing capacity as well as a 14.9 quarter mile time, if you want to tow or haul ass. I haven't driven either one, but my Dad and brother both drove the 4 cylinder and said it had plenty of get up and go. I just drove the new 2007 Camry XLE V6 with the 3.5. That motor is very smooth and quiet and will definately haul ass. I suspect both engines to be equally reliable.

Rav4,Camry, and Highlander all use the 2.4 as a base engine.
Why are you still on the Tacoma discussion Forum? Go to Nissan!!!!!

Hey Ron,
I am suprised to see you are willing to buy anything Toyota at all after the BS they gave you on your truck.
Any reason why?
I dont really have any input on your question, I am just curious.
If Toyota were to treat me the way you were treated with your Taco, I would tell them to get
F'd and never buy another.
Just wondering?

I sure do appreciate some of you worrying about my Toyota-soul. But I need to get a new truck. As I've explained before--the domestic brands aren't worth considering. Nissan is okay, but not great and the resale value isn't nearly as strong. And I've had nothing but great luck with all of my previous Toyota trucks. So, what's a guy to do? I feel that I don't have a lot of choices available. I'm not real happy about it.
And with this particular set of questions, it concerns a Rav4 which the wife has her heart set on. And I'm warning you, you really don't want to cross her.
