I recently purchased a 2005 Camry LE with the 2.4L 2AZ-FE with had a few issues that needed to be addressed. The most pressing issue was the speedometer not working, which was directly related to the ABS light, brake light, rough idle, and P0500 engine code. It idled so low and rough it actually died on me while I was going slow in reverse. I searched on various forums for hours and my research indicated it was likely something with the ABS control module, ABS wheel sensors, or the speed sensor located on the transmission under the air filter box.

Early on in my research, I went ahead and purchased a cheap speed sensor to see if it would be an easy fix. When this did not solve the issue, as it often does from what I've read online, I decided to work harder on diagnosing the issue instead of throwing parts at it. I learned that ABS codes cannot be read by your typical $20 OBDII reader but require a specialized reader. To read the codes without one of these readers, you can jump pins 13 and 4 on the OBDII port and the ABS light on the dash will blink out a code. You can jump the pins with a bit of wire or an unpainted paperclip(what I used). I've attached images of the OBDII pin layout and what the various ABS blink codes mean.

When I jumped the pins, the ABS light stayed on, continuously solid. No blink code. I surmised and later confirmed online this meant my ABS module was likely not functioning correctly. At the very least, the ABS control module was dead or malfunctioning, and possibly more. The modules can be found on eBay but are kind of expensive. I went to a local car junkyard and purchased two for $20 each(in case one was dead). The ABS module is located in the front passenger side of the engine bay. It is secured with four 4mm bolts and has one connector that must be disconnected before removal. It took me less than five minutes to remove it. I haven't found torque specs for the bolts, but since it appears the module is secured to plastic, avoid over tightening but make sure it's snug and secure. This instantly solved my problem. The speedometer began working, the ABS and Brake light turned off, and the check engine light didn't return(after I cleared the code). Surprisingly enough, it also solved my rough idle issue which I had assumed was unrelated.

Hopefully, someone else finds this information useful. I learned all of this through research on this forum and others, as well as my own trial and error. I've attached pictures of the ABS module and where it's located in the engine bay.

so I have a 2008 camry LE V6...when I am driving down the road the speedometer will stop working and the abs light will come on and the AC will stop blowing cold and then all of the sudden it will stop and everything starts working again ..When it does stop working the car still seems to drive fine ..Seems to still shift just fine and oddly enough if I have the cruise control set before the speedometer goes out the speed control keeps working and maintains the speed even if the speedometer is not working ..when the speedometer goes out with the other issues it may idle a tiny bit rougher but that could just be me ...I took it to O'Reilly's and had them run a obd2 and it came back with bad vehicle speed sensor code P0500 ...trying to find out online what this could be and it seems like it often is like the OP said that it is the ABS module that is the issue even though it says its the speed sensor on the code reader ...Now I did unplug the ABS module to see if that fixed it which is what one youtube video said to try but my speedometer would not work at all when it was unplugged .. now my problem is I bought the car off my brother for 1500 bucks which was a fantastic deal as I know the history of the car and I know it was extremely well maintained and is amazing condition but calling my local service center the amount of money they are wanting to diagnose and fix this is just to much I cant put 3000 dollars into a 1500 car that is not my daily driver kinda situation .... so does anyone know what is the most likely issue here or is there a way for me to test to find out if it is the speed sensor or if it is the ABS module and can anyone tell me does a 2008 camry have more then one speed sensor that could be causing the problem or that would have the P0500 code? ..Thank you all in advance

The speed sensor/skid control ECU/combination meter/ECU and associated circuit wiring carry the speed sensor signal. P0500 is set when ECM doesn't see the speed sensor signal.

Best case is a shop can test(using scope to detect signal) at the appropriate points to find where the signal is missing and repair as needed.

DIY without test equipment, inspect/clean sensor connection for fit/dirt.
Same at skid control ECU. If nothing apparent then replacing sensor is possible fix.

Note VSS "A" is one of two located on the trans. Search utube video for exact location.
Recommend if DIY get a scanner to read codes then easier to ID by disconcerting sensors and watching for which codes set.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi @alitrust2020 - you seems to describe exactly what the original poster posted. While I am not expert, it seems pretty safe to start with replacing your ABS module. There are a number of YouTubes on this, showing how it is done. With a little care and common sense it's a easy swap, that is once you local the correct ABS Module.

A important note, the part number on the bottom (you can't easily see if on the car) is critical when buying a replacement. I started a tread here entitled, '07 Solara ABS C0278/C1241 but No ABS Light where I think my ABS module might flaking out. Here I talk about the number and how I located it without removing it from the car.

For example, as with this OP's ABS module for his Camry, it matches mine which is "0 265 800 365". It is very important when you get a replacement ABS Module those first numbers match exactly.

That is about as far as my knowledge goes, I wish you well in Uganda and I hope the above helps in some small way.

Definitely the abs module, fixed many many Toyotas with these exact symptoms. If the donor part is the same gen nine times out of ten it will work. And when you get the faulty part off take a close look at it, it's amazing how the design is so simple it's complex. Go to your favorite salvage yard and dig one up. It will fix all those issues.
