Hello
My 2005 Camry I4 has oil in the spark plug wells that is causing a misfire. I googled this and found out that the valve cover gasket is bad. I called a mechanic and he said some engines you just change the gasket, but there are a few Toyota engines that the valve cover has to be replaced and that’s around $600.00 for the valve cover that the gasket won’t align with spark plug wells. I have googled this and can’t find nothing about having to change the cover. Is this true about the cover has anyone had this experience? The car has 368,000 miles on it and I hate to spend six hundred on a valve cover if I can keep from it. Thanks in advance for all the helpful remarks.

It’s not damaged there’s just oil leaking into the spark plug well causing a misfire. I thought about replacing it myself but if it’s anything that can leak even something as easy as a radiator hose I can make leak. There is no oil that I can see leaking to the outside of the valve cover.

For what it's worth, a valve cover gasket replacement job is something I would label as a pretty easy DIY project.
You need to make sure nothing falls in the engine while the cover is off, remove the old RTV and apply a new dab at the chain cover seams, and properly torque the cover back down evenly.
Even OEM gaskets are only something like $35. $150 seems way too expensive in my opinion.

There are plenty of videos online that have the step-by-step process, incase you are interested in saving money.
