ok so i was debating about rims, and i found a pair i like. went to the shop near my place and got quoted about $1200 for new rims, rubbers, and everything that comes with it. now, rims only make the car look nice. im now debating on using that $1200 and just using it on the engine. again, i would like rims, but i would prefer a faster car instead of a better looking one. Anyone have suggestions as to what i can do with $1200 on engine work. its a 96 dx, 4 cylinder, auto, everyday driver. any input is greatly appreciated. thanks

To beat a Civic with a petty B18C or B16A swap, you need to run at least low 14's or faster to take them. So you won't be smoking any Civics unless you are talking about single cams with a muffler. You can take those with a stock V6...haha

People often refer Civics as slow... I dunno, everytime I see a cleanly done Civic, it at least has a swap, a mild all motor build, or a turbo. Ever wonder why I built my Camry to its current state? So I can beat those pesky modded Civics!

Reality check --> A Civic EG with a stock B18C5 swap or a H22A will probably take 99% of all the Camry's in North America. Sad but true.

very true..... personally with 1200 bills, you are halfway to Rppmods S/C for your car, tack on another $500 for MISC, and say about $3000 to make your car competitive.....or as competitive as you can be in that price range

I agree 100% with tony's last post. A vtec civic or lude with bolt on's would rape any 4cyl camry with bolt on's.

My old lude with Intake, Exhaust, header, LSD, Flywheel and tuned ECU hit a 15.1 with a granny shift (Blown syncro) from 1st to 2nd and a horrible if any launch.

Yeah, even with a Homemade turbo style setup with Ebay parts, or a full Ripmodds S/C tuned and running at low boost, it's only pushing 185-220WHP for a 3000lb car. A Civic with H22A, or a B18C5 is pushing 175-180 WHP at 2200 lbs. It's hard to beat...

Hey The 'RY , if you want to have a setup like mine built from scratch including all engine management/fuel/tuning/internals/drivetrain, you are looking at $16000 to $20000. Although there are many things that could be cut back and reduce on costs that I know of. After learning from past experiences on what works and what doesn't on my Camry, I can skip a lot of the mods that weren't really necessary. I can probably build up another Camry V6 1MZ from scratch on a budget much cheaper; probably could do it with $10000- $12000 and have it running reliably, but of course, it won't be as sturdy and won't be as fun as my current setup with a ballbearing GT turbo + other goodies that I chose to spend the money on.

I would spend the 1200 on where you would actually see some gains... SUSPENSION!
-New performance struts
-New performance springs
-Bigger RSB
-Strut Tower Brace
And you'll have leftovers to invest in some Toyota stock too! ;)

i would go with the mods. just pick the right ones and you will need to save alittle more to make it right. took over 5000 just to get the stock 1mz into the low 14's, as you can see from my sig i still dont have rims but put in alot of mods. thrue the years i could have got mycar twise. do what you want. looks arnt everything put helps get you noticed.

I have beaten many fully built swapped civics with my stock V6...Vtec is no match for something called torque. But I would honestly say invest your $ into exterior mods to make it look like how you want it. Maybe some new springs/struts? Window tint? Rims for sure. If you want speed, but an MR2 turbo. If you want a nice, reliable car...slap some rims on your Camry and keep it around.

Let's not argue about who beating who... Most punks do not how to drive their cars, so an automatic Camry that is consistent could beat them.

Now when we talk about "built Civics", ones that are short of 200WHP are not built. My built all motor Integra back in the days had 240 WHP (with 160 ft-lbs starting from 2000RPM), 13.5:1 CR, TODA B cams, Hytech, PowerFC, etc... that's what I meant by built. Or a built setup with forged internals pushing over 300WHP on a turbo setup, or mid 250WHP on a JRSC is also called nicely built.. etc etc... I don't think any stock V6, or 3SGE or even any supercharged 1MZ's are going to touch those Civics.

Not that there are a small number of slow Civics... Civics are everywhere, and the percentage of slow ones are still much higher...hahah

But in reality, there are still way more "heavily modded" Civics with lots of power and fully built than all the total number of modded Camry of all generations added together. When I hang out with a good group of people with decent cars, all the Hondas that are within the group all run at least 13's or lower, and all know how to drive.

So when you think you are stomping on Civics, you are not. Sort of like when I beat a stock Mustang 5.0 with an intake, does it make me a 'V8killer'?

I used to have a bone stock '94 GSR. I pulled up at a light next to a kid with an identical GSR, maybe different year this was '96. I had 2 other guys in the car and a full tank of gas, and by 60 (when I let off) I had a car length on him. He spun in 2nd etc. It's got to be the driver the GSR weighs 2600lbs with, at the tim 172hp. The Camry almost weighs 4000lbs.
