Power Steering Problem

I have a 2006 Corolla S with almost 130k miles and I think I have a power steering pump problem (and hope its not the rack). I think I've been having these issues for about 2 weeks or so.

Here are some of my observations:

-Steering seems kind of "heavy". Not totally unassisted but heavier than usual.
-Steering wheel seems a little slow to return to center after turn
-Steering wheel is a little "mushy" on center
-Idling at a stop light while steering wheel is on center, if I turn the wheel in either direction slightly (maybe just an 1/8th of a turn) rpms rev very slightly maybe 50-100 rpm and you can hear a slight "whir" for a second or two.

I did some poking around this past weekend:

Power steering reservoir was full.
Fluid was deep red, slightly dark/brown.
Last I flushed it was probably about a year ago with valvoline maxlife syn ATF. Flushed at the time because I had to replace the rubber U return hose next to the reservoir because the hose was old or the clamp was wearing out. Wasn't really leaking more like seeping ATF out very slowly. Haven't had any problems since.
I lifted both front wheels off the ground and turned the wheel lock to lock. The wheel felt a little heavy just like when the wheels are down. There was no screeching or obvious loud noises. There were slight moans as the wheels gets towards the lock but it sounded normal to me. The was only one slight "click or knock" every now and then but it wasn't loud and wasn't overly concerning to me. I could see the fluid in the reservoir go up and down a bit as I turned the wheel. It wasn't a lot but from what i recall from when I last changed the fluid that was normal.

I took off the serpentine belt because I was going to replace it anyway.

I tried spinning all of the pulleys. The PS pump pulley seems a slow to spin (definitely more drag than say the serpentine belt pulley or the the a/c compressor or water pump). Should it be spinning just as freely?

My guess is perhaps the pulley is going bad or perhaps there is a bearing in the PS pump that is starting to seize, which is turn is perhaps not pumping enough fluid through the PS.

I was going to try and tighten the pulley but there is only a small hole in the center of the pulley with a deep reach and I couldn't figure out what socket or torx it was.

Something did smell a little burnt while I was under the hood. Best case, I'm hoping it was a little oil leaking out of the valve gasket or timing tensioner. Worst case, I'm hoping it wasn't PS rack getting fried. I couldn't pin point where the smell was coming from. I was thinking maybe it was the old belt if it was slipping but it still had a slight burnt smell yesterday, a day after I changed the belt. If I go along my instincts, perhaps the pulley or bearing is bad, spinning slow and causing some of the belt rubber to wear, burn.

Has anyone else had PS pump problems? I searched but couldn't find much on the 9th gen.

How difficult would it be to replace? Should I replace some of the lines too while I'm in there?

Is there a definitive test to test the PS pump?

Is the pulley or bearing serviceable on the car? If I have to take it off, I'm probably going to replace the whole unit instead of messing with it. I would just try to avoid opening the lines if I could.

I don't consider myself a mechanic by any means but I'm very handy and I can follow directions and DIY. I've replaced my own starter, alternator, radiator, sway bar links, bushings, quick struts, hoses, brakes, etc. so don't think I'm just overly ambitious.

I really hope it's not the rack. If so, this may be my Corolla's swan song. I could locate some replacement steps and DIY on the rack and I don't think I want to put myself through that type of work in removing the subframe and everything. Nor do I want to pay someone to do it. It seems like that would be at least 1k in costs.

If anyone has experience with the PS pumps, I'm open to getting their thoughts and opinions.

Youd hear a bad bearing on the power steering pump pulley. When power steering systems are low on fluid they make loud obvious groan/whine sounds when turning the wheel. If you heard neither, and the pulley didnt wobble at all when checked, dont bother replacing... yet.

When holding the steering wheel all the way to either side where it stops its normal to hear a groan, although its not something you should do normally and Ive read it isn't good for the steering system.

You said you flushed the fluid a year ago so it should be fine. If you've ever driven a car without power steering, its HEAVY. Really heavy. If your fluid is dark after 1 year, that's a bit concerning, as power steering fluid almost never has to be changed if there is no leak or contamination; it's a closed system.

I would first check your tire pressures and make sure they're in the 30's PSI range, no higher than 40. Could be your tires are simply low.

Thank you CorollaLE. Yes, the pulley didn't wobble and there weren't any loud super obvious noises. I just call them generally call them the moans and creaks for a nearly 13 year old car.

I know what no power steering feels like.....it wasn't that heavy but obviously heavier than usual. I wouldn't call the fluid "dark" but its definitely darker than when I had put it in a year ago. The valvoline maxlife to me tends to be a darker red to begin with so it didn't worry me too much. I guess in my mind I also changed the little u bend in the return hose when I flushed it last. Even though I flushed it at the time, perhaps the new hose has some black rubber wearing into the fluid.

I did buy new tires (bridgestone something or other from costco) about a month ago. I will certainly check the pressure. I do tend to like a few extra psi than what they usually put in. I think their default is 30psi. I usually go for 32-34. Hopefully that will help some as well with the firmer rubber meeting the road.

Where did you get the new U-hose? Did you get it from Chrysler/Dodge? Just wondering, because as far as I know, Toyota will not sell the U-hose by itself. You have to buy the whole line, which is over $100.

BTW, I have 357K miles on my 2004 Corolla with the original PS pump. I've flushed out the fluid 2-3 times and have never had a problem other than my U-hose seeps and it's very dirty/oily around there.

Yeah, thats the same experience I had. I could only find the entire return line as a whole piece but I didn't really want to take apart that much at the time if I didn't need to....and the whole return line was expensive.

It wasn't urgent because mine was like yours, wet and very slightly weeping so everytime I went into an auto parts store I would ask about that U bend line. It was always the same answer about buying the whole thing until I ran into a very helpful woman at o'reilly one day. She showed me the same picture on her computer and I told her I didn't want to spend money to buy the whole thing. I pointed at her computer and told her I only wanted the rubber u bend. She looked at it some more, clicked on a few things, went into the back and looked through their stockroom. She came back and told me she thinks this "bulk transmission hose" would work in that application. The package was a little damaged. She told me take this piece of string, measure the amount you need, bring it back and she would cut it for me since she used a sharp pipe cutter. I don't remember what size the hose was but it worked great! And it was only about five dollars. Be sure to replace the clamps as well. You can get them less than a dollar. I kept the rest of the package of bulk hose in case I need to replace it again. I'll go see if I can find the bag.

i always spend the little extra and get the proper parts and fluid, my matrix 270000km, flushed the p/s fluid once at toyota, still no problems yet, i would suspect fluid first, then check the parts that were changed, did u change all this because of regular maintenance, when did it start happening, before or after changing all this?

FYI - After having maxlife in there for a year my fluid was very dark and the steering was heavy. Did a complete flush with Redline full synthetic and it felt normal again. Not sure if there's something going on with the pump and it was just a coincidence that the maxlife was in there. I'll see how the Redline does.
