rattle there is usually a water pump

 

How’s your oil level. VVTI rattle is a thing. FWIW It’s probably a belt driven pulley but this is not something easily diagnosed on the internet.

 

I got oil changed about 2 weeks prior and level was good I think. It’s so hard to get an accurate reading with the dipstick smearing oil when taking it out.
I took it to the dealer and they determined it’s a bad water pump, getting it fixed tomorrow.

 

I second water pump if it is by the belt.

 

Thanks all I will take it to Toyota to get it checked out. I do have 3rd party extended warranty so I’m hoping it will be covered. I did do diagnostic tests via OBD reader and no fault codes yet. Coolant temp stays normal.

Trade it....
The 3rd generation highlander post 2017 is a toyota fail. Too many issues and expensive issues.

 

Lol oh man that’s not what I want to hear. I’m hoping to keep it for a few more years at least.
My extended warranty expires in 28 months and/or 71k miles.

 

If that's a metallic rattling, take a quick minute to check heat shields in engine bay & underneath vehicle, e.g., at Catalytic Converter. Their edges can rust away from the retainer bolts, and chatter like there's no tomorrow. Easy fix.
