On my car there is one lap belt and another belt that clicks into the top of the door.
If anyone has successfully replaced the 2 seperate belts with a normal seat belt please post.
My seat belts are worn and I need to replace them and would rather have a normal one.

I've been wondering about this too. What year is your car? I'm not sure if 1992 models came with a single 3-point belt or if all 6th gens had the same kind. Maybe Canadian models?

Pretty sure these 2 separate belts were required by law if the car didn't have an airbag to satisfy the passive restraint requirement. You can leave the top one buckled and still get out. Some other makes/models still had 3-point belts but they were attached at the door, so you could open the door with belt buckled and slide out.

It's possible to be done. Does your b pillar cover have a slot to pass the belt through?

Parts that would be needed is the top support for the seat belt. This gets mounted to the upper section of the b pillar. The mounting points may not be there. Might have to rig up your own. The b pillar cover may need to be modified also. Did Toyota change the seat belts towards the end of the generation?

The location of the lap belt is where the seat belt assy will mount to for a traditional seat belt.

Hope this helps.

I'm used to it, so I don't mind it, but I always have to explain it to new passengers, but not very often.

I don't lke to leave the top belt fastened because I'm afraid opening the door will pull the belt out too far and damage the old retract spring.

And I'd be afraid to rig up my own attachment and have it fail in an accident.

Basically what happened was the big politicians made it to where auto manufacturers had to either equip new cars with airbags, or "force" the front seat occupants to wear a seat belt. So, by fixing it to the door and stamping the red release button with "Press if Emergency" people where buckled in the car by default just by opening the door and sitting in the car. This mandate was passed, and in effect starting for vehicles manufactured in 1990. This is why some of the first Geo Prizm's ever built (model year 1990, but built in 1989) had traditional seat belts. 1988-1989 Corolla's had traditional seat belts. All AE92's came with 2 piece seat belts after 1990.

I'm going to be doing this conversion on my Corolla and will post about it on my build thread. I have all the parts for the conversion, just not the time. I don't mind the 2 piece belts, but when they get as worn out as they are in my Corolla they get VERY annoying. The shoulder belt retracts about 2 feet and then stops. The lap belts retracts until about a foot is left and then it stops... I get very tired of shutting the door on it!
