Replacing Alternator on an 1999 Toyota Camry

Has anyone ever encountered this issue of NOT being able to pull/yank out the plastic 3-wire electrical connector on an Alternator? (see circled area). I can press the plastic tab on the connector, but the connector itself will not even budge a bit. I don't want to use any long nose pliers or other tools to try to yank the connector off as I don't want to break the plastic sides. Is there something locking the connector in place that is preventing me from pulling it off? It sure seems stuck in there.

Also, what is this hose that I marked with "X"? Do I need to remove it if I want to replace the Alternator or can I get by without having to do that?

Thanks for any assistance!

Jimmy.

Without depressing the connector's clip, try pushing in (towards the center of the alternator). Then try pushing the clip and removing the connector.

Alternatively: Remove the bolts and nuts holding the thin steel cover on it (embossed with "ND" for Nippon Denso). Then I would take a screwdriver and see if I could pry a bit on a few edges while pressing the clip. Vacuum and/or dirt holds these plugs in place sometimes.

Youtube has several videos to help with the alternator. E.g. see

The hose looks like an A/C refrigerant line to me. But someone else who actually owns a V6 will nail this.

Elle_Rav4,

Thanks for these suggestions. I have read about people removing the nuts holding the steel cover in order to push out the connector but was always wary about doing that. Once my replacement alternator arrives, I will try that on the replacement to better understand what's behind this steel cover.

Any small, "-" screwdriver will work so long as it is wide enough to not just cut into the resin, and strong enough to not just bend when used as a tiny lever like this.

I use the little one visible in this photo:

That's an AC hose. No need to remove, that will cause you to have to evac and refill the AC. Patiently wiggle back and forth Maybe some grime is in the connector making it difficult to relase.
BTW: When my ALT went out I bought the $10 brush kit, took two minutes to replace the old brushes and all was good. Obviously if the bearings or other major issue with the ALT the kit won't help.
