Reverse Issues - Gear not engaging properly

I recently noticed that when I put my automatic Corolla into reverse, the transmission does not seem to engage properly. It acts almost like a manual as if you were partially holding the clutch while giving it gas. The car still reverses at the moment but does not reverse as if it was in gear. It has full power when putting it into drive. The car does not shift roughly and I did not see any metal shavings whatsoever after changing the oil. The transmission fluid looked good and was at a normal level. Checked the bushing under the shifter and it looked good (see photo). I also checked the shifter cable at the transmission and did not notice any cracks or anything.

I think the transmission is in good shape so looking to hear anyone else’s opinion on this.

My bad. That looked like the transmission.

The cup on the shifter cable on the transmission or the cable stretched and is broken internally.

edit : I’ve seen this mentioned before. The selector that goes into the transmission can be bent and is stuck. Something to consider as well.

I had a similar problem a few years ago. If I remember correctly, it was when the weather was cold. When I put it in reverse, it would still go in reverse, but it felt like as if the brake was being applied, so it didn't have full power (sometimes). I resolved the issue by replacing the transmission fluid (I believe I also dropped the tranny pan and replaced the strainer filter and gasket, but that probably wasn't necessary). The problem has not come back. I used Valvoline MaxLife synthetic ATF (red jug) which is spec'd for T-IV and also T-WS. I make sure to at least do a drain/refill every couple of years or even a full system exchange of the fluid using the cooler line low-pressure method.

Thanks John, my brother was more aligned with your response. The car did sit in the cold for a week while was out of town. When I came back I took the car on a 150 mile trip which is when I noticed the issue. Have been having the issue since, even when warmed up. I will start with doing a fluid flush and refill to see if that fixes it

It's around 3.2 quarts if you're doing a drain/refill. If you're doing the cooler line flush then you'll need a minimum of 8 quarts, but 10+ quarts is better to make sure it's all flushed out. If you drop the pan, you should clean up the magnet(s). I've never ever had a problem with the WIX brand for the gasket/strainer kit.

I performed a drain and fill with the transmission fluid and unfortunately the problem still persists. One thing I did notice is that the car is shifting like butter now. I thought it was smooth before but now I can’t even feel the shifting of gears which is a good thing; needed the new fluid.

I can reverse somewhat normally by tapping the gas pedal. But if I hold the gas pedal the car will just rev. Only will the car reverse “in gear” when tapping the gas. I will add a photo of the shifter cable on the transmission side to see if anything stands out to you guys.

Okay thanks for the insight. As a bit more background, when I shift from park to Reverse (using button) the car doors lock and the car shifts into gear but won’t reverse as it should unless I tap the gas. I’ve been parking on a downhill because car struggles a bit reversing uphill even when tapping the gas. I can then shift from neutral to any of the other gears without using the shifter button but requires the button when shifting back up. It’s really weird that I haven’t noticed anything different about the car, just randomly started happening and has been reversing weird for the past two weeks. Wish there was a way to send videos on here so yall can see what’s happening.

Edit: I took a video of the shifter cable on the transmission side. Is the cable supposed to kink in the rubber sheathing? If not, I think this is the issue. I can send the video to an email address if necessary to verify.

Below is a link to how the vehicle is currently reversing. I describe in the description of the video that if I just accelerate while in reverse the car won’t move (20 second mark on video). If I tap the gas, it will reverse (30 second mark on video)
@75aces @John Anthony thoughts?
I can post the video of the shifter cable at the transmission side of the engine if necessary

I have also posted a video of the shifter cable at the transmission side. I’ve been dealing with the problem by parking on hills or pulling through parking spots. The car cannot reverse up any sort of incline. I’m at the point that I may bring it to a shop. I did grease the pin on the shifter cable thinking that might’ve been seized but thinking the tranny is on its way out…
