RPM drops twice?

Hello,

2011 Corolla S 1.8L 4 speed a/t

I have noticed that when my car shifts from second into third gear at around 50 km/hr that the rpm drops twice. It shifts (almost seemingly to a 2.5 gear) and the rpm drops and then a second later it's like it shifts again and the rpm drops again, is this torque converter lock up I am experiencing? Anyone else have this issue?

This also usually happens when I give it light throttle and not when I am heavily accelerating.

Thanks

I don't know the programming rules for when the torque converter locks/unlocks. What you described certainly sounds like the torque converter locking, so it isn't an issue at all.

I think I've also caught mine unlocking when coming to a grade, similar to what you described, like it downshifted half a gear. If I go ahead and manually pull it out of D to 3, it feels like it shifts "the other half".

When i get my second rpm drop around 50 km/hr, the car almost has a "kick" to it -similar to a gear shift-, like the engine is under additional load for a second then goes away as I accelerate, is this consistent with a torque converter lock up, or a sign of trouble?

You are feeling the effects of the torque converter locking in. When it does the engine torque is 100% transfered to the transmission so you may feel a slight jerk during engagement as you are feeling the rpms drop as the converter locks in.
