hit the drive belts with a short blast 'o WD40 or equivalent. Could be drive belts

 

I have been using Prestone Belt treatment spay. I would rather use WD40...but I would think that WD40 would make the belts slip more?

 

Im betting on the belts too, mine does the same thing

 

Tighten your belts as well, typically alt belt.

the WD40 is not to treat the belts, It is just to shut them up for a bit so you can see if that is actually whats wrong

 

That makes more sense. I still wonder why my belt squeeks on start up. I've replace belts several time and they are tight. The belt dressing helps, but there seems to be a fundamental problem. Do I need to replace the pulleys?

 

what kind of belts did you install? In my experiance non oem belts tended to stretch alot more and required frequent re-tightning...

 

also, if the belts/pulley are not aligned with the other pullys they will have "standing friction" and squeal a sec on startup, so check for any torsion within the belt, aaaaannnnnddddd check to make sure your belts are the correct type, as in V type, flat, riged, cross riged.

I tightened the alternator belt...took 5 minutes. Startup squeal is gone. I wonder if its possible to have the belt too tight?

 

Unless you were reefin on it with some sort of ungodly cheaterbar, you're fine

 

All I know is that its tight and quiet!

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think to check the belts because it doesn't have that special belt squeal.
