I’m a 67yr old widower, I live in Northern California. Spend a lot of time shopping for plants and flowers.
I love to garden.
the reason for me joining is my Highlander make a strange noise.
it happens after the car is parked and engine is turned off.
it’s still under warranty, Toyota has no clue what the problem is.
so I am reaching out if anyone has a strange noise, it comes from the right rear area.
I have several videos of the sound. Not sure how to add that.

Does the sound occur right after the engine is shut off or after an hour or so?

If the latter, it's the EVAP system purging. Very normal.

The engine compartment will have some noise after shutting down. It is normal for newer vehicles.

The EVAP system is the easiest to hear. It’s like a small vacuum pump noise.

the noise is not coming from the engine, it is from the rear passenger side.

Does it happen when you put the car in park but keep it running? It could be the rear parking brake...they tend to squeak for about 1-2 seconds during activation. If Toyota dealer is going to have the car to check, have them check the parking brake operation and lubricate the parking brake slides.

The tailpipe is on that side of the car back there. Could it be metal popping as the pipe cools? My exhaust systems always make ticking or popping sounds while cooling down after turning the car off.

Odds are that what you're hearing is normal and not a sign of a problem. We're just trying to figure out exactly what it is.

Yes, these noises are normal....don't fret over them! Modern Toyota's have 30+ computers so lots of things normalizing and doing things even when the vehicle is turned off. If you Highlander is a Hybrid, there's even MORE noises.
Many sounds can come from metal cooling down after being out hot weather and, again, this is normal. My daughter used to have a Suzuki car and it had aluminum heat shields all around her tailpipe and those things would make quite a racket whenever she parked. (So much so that I had to take her and the car to my mechanic to get it on the lift to show her.)
Congrats on the Highlander....GREAT vehicle! Just don't neglect the oil changes every 6-months or 5,000 miles, whichever comes first and she'll last for many years.

The problem with my Highlander, it’s the Electronic Parking Brake System. It’s re-engaging after I’m parked and engine is off.
I don’t park on any incline or hills. Never have.
It’s normal for this to happen when the car senses it’s on an incline or hill. The fact is no other Toyota makes the loud noise mine does.
So now my Dealership say everything is fine.
Cooperation says we’ll start a lemon law case.
I just want my car fixed.
This is my fifth Toyota in 30 years.
