2014 Avalon Hybrid, < 5000 miles...

Internal combustion engine is rough when cold.

Noticed it last week. Started car early in the morning and got on freeway almost immediately. Engine was producing a bad enough vibration that I almost stopped to see if I had a tire going bad. Smoothed out after a few minutes.

Another morning the engine started to apparently charge the battery, just started car and everything was cold. Noticed the motor was running rough.

Anyone else experienced this or have any input?

I have not noticed what you describe in our 2014 TAH Touring. Our 2012 Camry Hybrid (same drivetrain) had 2-3 instances where the transition from EV to ICE was slightly rough but only for a moment in the 2.5 years we owned it. If the ICE is rough for more than a second or two something is not right. Are any codes being set? Is the E-brake completely disengaged. Bad gas could be an issue? Run it down near E (fortunately it takes a while in these Hybrids) and try a different fuel source (tier 1 gas) to eliminate fuel as a possibility. A station you go to often might have received a bad lot.

These are VERY reliable drivetrains from my reading the TCH and TAH forums over the past 2-3 years so I would not expect rough running.

Keep us posted, and good luck resolving this issue.

We haven't experienced the ICE running as rough as you describe, but by the time we're on the highway, the car has already warmed up. I do think it runs a little rough while warming up a bit sitting in the driveway, and the exhaust smell is strong, but again, nothing like you describe. We've had some really cold mornings here in MD, probably same as you in VA.

Since you probably don't do as many fill-ups with the hybrid as you would with a non-hybrid, it might be worth trying a fuel additive for a few tanks of gas, as Den49 has suggested. I know I would like to do that as preventive care, just haven't got around to it yet.
