Temp. Sensor problem

I think I might have a problem with my temp. sensor; when I sit idling for about 2-3 mins., it goes to the normal temp, about halfway up the temp. gauge, but as soon as I start driving again, it goes back to right above the line for cold. This worries me as this is my only indication of engine temperature, and I don't want to work the engine with cold oil. Is this a natural occurrence with Toyotas? On both of my parents Hondas, once it reaches normal operating temp. it stays there, no matter what conditions it's under. Also, I think I should add that this only happens in colder weather, when it's warm, it's not nearly as drastic.

Could be the temperature gauge sensor is bad or the cooling system has a problem.

You can test the sensor with an ohmmeter; the ohm reading should decreases linearly as the coolant temp increases.

The thermostat may be stuck in one position. The coolant warms up at a stop because no air is flowing through the radiator. Once the car is moving air starts flowing through the radiator and cools the coolant down. In hot weather the outside air is closer to the coolant temp and as such not as effective in cooling it down. The thermostat should be adjusting the coolant flow to keep it at normal operating temp.

You can check the coolant temp with a thermometer stuck in the radiator fill port, start out with the engine cold.
