My wife drives a 2018 HL Hybrid Limited Platinum package and here’s what I’d change.

  1. HID headlights are terrible, full LED including fog lights needed
  2. no apple car play
  3. no remote start from key fob
  4. should have full acoustic glass
  5. should have semi analine leather upgrade option for all 3 rows
  6. no power folding or reverse turn down side mirrors
  7. steering correction for lane keep assist should be much stronger
  8. all interior and exterior bulbs should be daylight LEDs
  9. 3rd row access is a joke
  10. turning up the fan speed for rear passengers requires wrenching your arm or back from the front

hmm. re point #1 - there are no HID headlights on the Highlander from factory! They are halogens behind projectors.

Thank u, I could have sworn I read the platinum package provided HIDs.... but maybe I’m wrong.... I’ll have to research my paperwork..... either way, they stink

No remote caught me off guard, and was surprised that it wasn't standard with the Limited Platinum. Ended up costing me $1K!

The lane centering function on my LC 500 works better.

I installed a remote starter from 12volt.solutions for $250 I believe. The downside is that it has the garbage 100 ft range from factory though.

The 3rd row is a joke lol. I have an elderly relative who on seeing the 3rd row was impressed and eager to try it out, they are small in stature around 5ft, so with some effort they got in and with the 2nd row adjusted we set of for a destination about 10 minutes away, durng the effort to get out they landed rather heavily and luckily didn't fall over or sustain injury, the extremely limited access coupled with the 8 inch ride height makes exit a rather risky exercise even possibly for agile children. Most reviewers concentrate on the lack of space in the 3rd row and the real issue is very difficult access, the 3rd row in the 4 runner must be truly awful. The highlander is a good vehicle for 5 passengers as the rear is quiet and relatively comfortable (rear seat is firm and rather flat)and it copes with the loading easily, but 3rd row is emergency use only. I would recommend the vehicle to others and the relative thought it was great but not the 3rd row and for that reason if one has practical considerations not the 4 seat arrangement with captains chairs over the bench seat as the 3rd row is rather useless even with the better access that arrangement provides.

The temp adjust knobs are impossible to adjust, as they need to stick out more so there’s something to grab, and the “detent” feel, when turning them is to weak, as you can’t hardly “feel” the detents. Also, Limited & Platinum’s ft passenger seat should also be the same as the drivers seat, either 8 or 10 way, and not the cheap 4way, which doesn’t go up or down.

The 3rd row is for kids. I've used it ONCE....and my 6'6 nephew sat back there. I wouldn't ride back there...and I'm only 6'3.

But didn't buy either vehicle for the 3rd row. Never used. I do like the extra space behind the 2nd row. Can fit 2+ sets of golf clubs.

But if a 3rd row is a major concern.....then maybe the Sequoia.

I have tried it out myself and I am 5' 11", I fit but my head was touching the headliner and getting out is awkward, I didn't buy the vehicle for the 3rd row and if someone needs seating for 6 or more on a regular basis get a sienna. The sequoia I could imagine having the same ' ' problem of getting in and out and could be worse because of the greater ride height, those sort of setups require a low ride height like a car to work best.

My 3rd row is always folded up since my kids love to sit back there. They definitely use the running boards to help get in, where as I never use them.

I've sat in the 3rd row a few times just to try it out while my wife drives. I'm 6ft and it wasn't terrible, as long as the captain chair was pushed forward for more leg room and the 3rd row middle seat was empty.

Overall it's not great for taller adults, especially on long trips, but it works well for our family situation. When we purchased the HL I obviously knew the 3rd row wasn't even close to best in class. If 3rd row room/accessibility was super important, I would have gone with a bigger SUV. Still refuse to get a minivan...

HUD sounds like neat technology and a selling point, but IMO not very useful. I had HUD in 3 Corvettes, and only used it for top end runs. With my LC 500 I just don't ever look at it. I'm just too set on the Speedo in any car to remember day to day that the HUD is even there.

Of course your mileage here may vary...

I'd like:

HUD
Folding mirrors
Better cooling in the ventilated seats
360 degree camera and front camera (why are they only available in the Limited Platinum?)
HID headlights (starting in 2019 at least the fog lights are LED)
LED interior lights
Auto Start-Stop to remember its last on/off setting every time the car is turned on

My short list:

Eliminate auto start/stop
Switch to turn off alarm when rear window is open. Would be nice to have when carrying long objects.
Seat return and memory for when the vehicle is turned off/on. Even my cheap little Nissan has this feature.
Power fold down rear seats

  1. Sounds like you'd rather have an RX 450h. Even on the RX the luxury package (which is required to get semi-aniline leather) is a very rare option, because not many people want to pay a few thousand extra for more delicate leather.

I actually had a fully completed order form for the RX 450HL, but canceled because it is not rated for towing. The 450H, yes, but the L version, no. Getting into the backseat of the 450 was much more painful as well.....it was also another $13k, which, in the end, I couldn't justify

-What's the use case for remote start from key fob? Is that for cold areas? I had that in a 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse (aftermarket alarm with remote start installed), but never used it. I do like the remote climate control in the Tesla, that's very useful.

-Reverse turn down side mirrors, yes! Can't believe it doesn't have this super simple feature.

-Steering Correction - I like it the way it is as sometimes I want to swing out a bit wider to avoid something. But I can see the desire for an option to make it stronger.

-Fan speed for rear passengers. Aren't those controls avail on the dash? Or is that just to change temperature for rear? I want a rear climate lock so the kids stop f*cking around with it! :)

My additions:
-I want the rear glass to be power controlled like the old Forerunners. When my dogs are back there, I'd like for them to be able to get some air through the back, without fear that they'd jump out. (has anyone figured out a good way to solve this problem)?

-streaming audio through options other than Slacker, e.g., spotify, google/youtube music, etc.

-a useful mobile app! something that allows me to see where the car is, speed, lock/unlock, start/stop...basically the Tesla mobile app.

-better fuel consumption tracking. unless I'm missing something, I have 2 trip controls, but I don't have anything where I can see long term how my average fuel consumption is. It shows me the Best, but not the average across multiple trips/resets. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Didn't the OP get the Platinum package? With 360 degree surround view, why even look at the side mirror? Power folding mirrors might be nice, but, 1. I am not buying a Lexus, 2. folding mechanism will wear out.

Want a middle bench that seats 2 and 1 and does not skimp on the middle passenger.
Had 2nd row Captain's Chairs in 17 HL and got bench in 19 because stuff fell through to floor when middle and back folded down. For long trip with 2 adults and 2 teens, needed more packing space so flattened driver's side of middle bench. The seating space left on bench is miserable and the middle person sits on the outside seat belt fastener. Previous MDX much better.

After a month of ownership of my 2016 Hybrid Limited Platinum, these are my (few) gripes:

- No automatic right mirror dip in reverse. Most of my parking is along city curbs so this is a really useful feature.
- No power-folding mirrors. Again useful for spots on narrow city streets.
- No palm sensor or lock sensor on rear outside door handles. Even my cheaply built Bolt has this.
- I'd like the power gauge to actually have numbers (e.g., how many kW the powertrain is putting out or regenerating).
- Would like one more memory slot for the seat memory.
- Auto parking brake release when shifting out of park.
