I have a 2016 Corolla LE. Do I have a timing chain or belt? And if I have a chain, when do I change it? If I have a belt, when do I change it?

You have a timing chain in your 2zr engine. I’m not certain if there’s a recommended mileage to replace the timing chain. Though, if you have no service history, you can remove the valve cover and put cylinder 1 at top dead center and verify the chain. If there’s slack at cylinder 1, then it’s time for service. This includes the timing chain guides, vvt sprocket on the intake cam and oil pump.

In the old days, many American made cars' timing gears were plastic coated. After the chain wore a certain degree, the coating would flake off, throwing the timing off and the engine either barely ran or wouldn't run, but that saved it from crashing the valves. Replacement of the chain and gears was the remedy- if you knew what to fix. Otherwise a lot of them went to the junk yard with about 100,000 miles on them. Your Toyota is not like that. There you are going 150,000- 200,000 miles and the timing chain is still good.

If you just do regular oil changes (every 6-months or 5,000 miles), you'll never have to worry about it until many years from now. Our old Corolla (2008) is going on 200,000 miles and running like a champ.
