Timing chain tensionor leak.

I've replaced the oring twice. Last time was yesterday. It still leaked, so today I pulled it again and cleaned the hole out as best as I could. I reinstalled and I drove about 20 minutes and there's a little leak. I don't think it even had a drop yet onto the power steering. I'm thinking of buying a new Cloves tensionor from RA for $15. I did not use RTV and I torqued to 80 inches. Thoughts.

Thanks. Dumb question coming. Should I put the RTV on the block or tensionor or both? Is ultra black permatex OK to use?

I googled it and it looks like ultra black is RTV.

Still leaking. I think I'll order the Cloves tensionor and give it one more shot. I'm starting to think that maybe it's the TC cover? Thoughts?

Also, it almost seems like it's a little worse with the RTV! Hmmm. This sucks :)

I don't suggest getting it on the O ring area. Putting some around the base helps seal it up better for sure. It sure looks like it's leaking from the chain tensioner but you need to get a mirror down there and verify nothing is running from above it. Is the surface it's sitting on clean and flat? Did you lube the O-ring with a light coat of silicone grease or engine oil when installing? Are there any scratches or gouges where the tensioner inserts?

Ok, there's a chance the tensionor issue is resolved. I went and bought a new Cloyes tensionor. I pulled the old one and compared them. The Cloyes has a smaller channel then the OEM one. The oring sits in the channel tighter.

I cleaned the area again and I put some oil on the oring. I popped the new tensioner right in. No RTV. It popped past the o-ring and went right in. The old one did not pop all the way in. I had to tighten it to get it in. Maybe this was because I didn't really know what I was doing. I would suggest to anyone with a gen 8 maybe just buy a new tensionor if the oring feels loose. The Cloyes is $15 on RA. I am probably going to be pulling the tensionor on my Vibe in a week or so. I compare that tensionor to the gen 8 and report back.

I do have the slightest of oil showing up in the area but I think it might be from the TC cover.

I used the OEM on the first 3 attemps. The last of the 3 I used the RTV. That leaked the most. I think I did a bad job putting on the RTV, I had oil on the tensionor, etc . The 4th time I used the new Cloyes with no RTV.

I am going to fix the tensionor leak on the Vibe in a few weeks. I just ordered a new tensionor from Cool springs Toyota. $30 delivered. For me I think this is the best approach. If I remember I will take a side by side picture of the old and new tensionor.
