i know this was in an earlier thread but the question was unanswered....do i need to put on a clear coat after applying the toyota touch up paint? i asked the toyota rep and he said clearcoat is included, but then right on the bottle it says apply clear coat after 24 hours.....do i need clearcoat or not? the paint looks a little glossy but doesnt look as glossy as the car paint

I usually use nail polish for touch up paint. I like it because it dries hard and has a gloss and doesn't usually make a mess. However base coat (which I am assuming you were given) will take a few coats to cover if you are using it for touch up jobs. One of my secrets though is to add an activator or hardener to the basecoat which will thicken it and leave it glossy instead of flat looking. Then you wouldn't need a clear coat.

wow im surprised too see my own thread pop back up lol it's been more than a year

it was the little touch up bottle with the brush, and i didn't apply any clearcoat afterwards...at first the touch up was sticking out like a sore thumb but somehow it started blending in with the rest of the paint and now i honestly can't even find where the exact location the paint was applied....if i look at the car from different angles im sure i can spot it but just a regular closeup look the touchup has completely blended in for me

WTF! Go to a different dealer then. You're dealer should be able to look up the part number, and they should have it in stock too. If they can't even find their own products that THEY sell, I don't know how I would ever trust them to touch my car...

Oh yeah, paint codes are listed on the driver side door jam. Find it, google it (ex: google: "touch up (insert color code here)" , buy it. Not too hard right? lol

Here are the part numbers (correct if I'm wrong)...

040 - SUPER WHITE
209 - BLACK SAND PEARL
3R3 - BARCELONA RED METALLIC
4Q2 - DESERT SAND MICA
1F7 - CLASSIC SILVER METALLIC
1G3 - MAGNETIC GRAY METALLIC
779 - CAPRI SEA METALLIC
8T7 - BLUE STREAK METALLIC

The clear-coat is suppose to provide a better match when used with the colour-coat. From my experience, it sometimes does but it can also darken the colour-coat making the difference from the rest of the car more apparent. It also provides more protection just like the clear-coat on the OEM paint.

Yes, clearcoat will provide slightly additional protection, same as another touch of the paint will. It is not "required". The Toyota pens now include clearcoat on one end, and the colored paint on the other end.

Personally I like the small bottles of touchup paint (with brush) better then the pens (with felt tip), but then you dont get clearcoat unless you also buy a touchup bottle of clearcoat. To each his own.

the touch up pens toyota sells are terrible, they should have a fine point version of them for rock chips. one thing that sucked is that even after 5 days of drying when i put the clear coat on the pen sucked up some of the paint making it look like crappy. it acted almost like a solvent. :( imo the touchup looked better without the clear coat.... oh well now im stuck with two small touch up marks. Hopefully the 3M stuff keeps me from having to use the pen again.
