Hi,

I am researching on a tow hitch and roof rack for the HiHy. I have a limited and one concern is the hands free kick sensor. Any recommendation is appreciated.

Thank you!

People have said the aftermarket Curt hitch is fine with the sensor. There is supposed to be the Toyota one that works also, but you have to kick towards the driver side (iirc). It's more expensive and includes a replacement lower valence panel

Roof Rack: not too many choices other than Genuine Toyota or Chinese knockoffs

I'd spring for the OEM cross bars if you need them right away. Otherwise, you could wait to see if Thule or Yakima comes out with something in the next few years, but who knows if they even will.

I prefer Thule or Yakima racks if given the option. OEM crossbars tend to be weaker. However... the Thule/Yakima stuff can sometimes be quite pricey... even more so than OEM.

Edit: Response from Yakima. Skyline System is for Highlanders with the flush mounted tracks/side rails.

"They are shooting for a release of the Skyline fit by the end of February. This date is always subject to change, but that's what we are looking at at the moment.

Once they release that, this will be the setup that will work with your vehicle:"

This has been pushed to "late Spring or Early Summer" according to the Yakima customer service individual I spoke with last week. I have a roof top cargo pod and will be using the Yakima rack system.
The only component we are waiting on is the Landing Pad (#28), specific to the 2020+ Highlanders. All the rest of the components are available today.
The big advantage with the Yakima rack will be the ability to remove it. All that will remain will be the landing pads and those have a cover that clips on.

I asked the same question (about being a beta tester for the Landing Pad #28) when I got the update of "late Spring, early Summer", but was told that they had already completed that phase in their development...and I live less than 10 miles from their Corporate HQ in Portland (technically they are in Lake Oswego, OR).

If you have some pull, by all means put me in contact with your source. I can report back to this forum, provided they don't have me sign a NDA.

Typically, the Curt hitches don't require cutting of the bumper (hence, why they tend to sit lower to the ground than OEM hitches). You'll have to ask about this specific model when you give them a call, though.
