will my car(09 camry) still work if i use a copied key w/o the transponder chip in it and i have the master key(which has the transponder in it) near the ignition? does the car send a signal to the key by some electrical current to turn on the frequency in the key to start the engine or having it close by will work too?

i just ordered a switchblade key for the camry and it doesn't have the transponder chip in the key.. just a blank camry key. i really like the look of a switchblade but it doesn't have the chip in it, so i am wondering will having the original key mounted near by, will it start the car while using the copied key. the chip is in bedded in the original key(the little dot near the top of the metal part), so i can't take the chip out like honda keys that it is seperate and can be moved from key to key. can i just have my valet key mounted near by for it to work?

The dot is not the transponder, the transponder is a small chip that looks like this:

imbedded inside the head of the key, but it can be cut out and relocated, though I'd get a spare key as the first one I tried I messed up, so I wouldn't do it using your current master key. The other issue though, you need a Toyota Techstream ECU programing system to program in new master keys. The dot on the metal is to indicate what type of transponder the key uses, the keys with the dot are the "newer" style. If you need a cheap transponder get a yaris or similar used key off ebay, you can usually get them for 10 bucks or so, the remote tends not to work but the transponder worked fine. For a full key you can buy used camry masters for 15-20. You can hypothetically extract the transponder out of a generic non-remote key that you can buy for 6 bucks or so, but it's more difficult to do since you have to cut the crap out of the plastic head to peel it off.

No it will not work. Its not a SmartKey or Push button ignition like the Prius. The transponder chip has to be in the key in order to communicate via ignition. That is why remote starts require a spare key to fool the car into thinking the key is in the ignition. Even transponders for remote starts generates a code to fool the car even without the need of a spare key.

Also, since you already have the switchblade and the original key, why not try it and answer the question yourself?

Assuming this is how it is setup/made and you're skilled, take the key/chip from the original and place it in the switchblade.

Correction: the chip does not need to be in the key head or box, it has to be in the vicinity of the transceiver, aka key cylinder. So yeah, ppl have zip-tied to the key cylinder. On regular keyhead, the chip is placed parallel to the key shaft when it joins w/ the head.

See my other message, but if you have some valid reason to need to do it, the key would need to be INSIDE the steering column surround mounted directly below the ignition cylinder as close as possible to it and in the same orientation as if it was "in" the ignition (ie parallel with the cylinder)
