TPM false alarms, are they frequent?

I just came back from a 2K road trip (2011 base 20,200 Km ) and had my first false TPM (tire pressure monitor) alarm. . Checked all the pressures.. good at ~34psi including spare. With no Toyota dealer in town and the local GM dealer not interested I went to a tire / muffler shop where they rechecked all the pressures and then did a reset.

So, is this happening to others.. often?

Hasn't happened to me, we are at 25k miles. We did have the spare going down to the 20's psi during the winter months.

My '12 came on for the first time 15 miles into a 1200 mile trip with almost 5000 miles on the odometer. I checked the pressure in all 5 tires twice the had to live with the light on. Once home the Toyota dealer checked it and told me that the system was never initalized, been good since and now up to 9000 miles.

2013 TPM light keeps coming on

My TPM light has been intermittently coming on since February. Bought it in January. Told dealer at 5,000 mile service - said they filled the tires and all is fine. I had tried that before and it worked...temporarily.

It's not -- it's back and has been consistently back. It's almost on cue in the same place on my daily commute -- about 20 miles into the trip. It flashes for a minute and then goes solid. Manual says it indicates a sensor problem.

Sometimes it will go for a day or two without coming on but it's pretty consistent.

I am wondering if I can just reset the silly thing and it will go away.

Anybody else had it do this -- almost on cue?

Thanks.

This can happen if the system does not detect a sensor for 20 mins.

Example(I have a hybrid, so my tpms is a little different than non-hybrids): I had my winter tires on, and the car would detect the tpms in the tires in the garage. Then I would leave and it would say "checking". After 20 mins, i would get the warning. If I only did short trips, no warning.

Maybe you have a faulty sensor, or the spare tire one is missing?

.... I almost wonder if there is a massive radio frequency near theirs at that location, and thus each time you drive by, it screws them up on que?

Funny, but I was thinking along the same lines. While it's a great idea and a real lifesaver, the current TPMS systems are really first generation and less than perfect. To really appreciate the magic of RF transmission systems, you have to realize how innovative yet fragile they are.

4 coin-cell powered 315mhz transmitters sealed in a permanently damp environment are expected to last for 7-8 years minimum. They put out a little peep of data (nanowatts?) that must be logged by the receiver. There is all sorts of leeway and allowance for missing or corrupted data for an extended period of time programmed in, otherwise you would be constantly annoyed by false warnings. There are many things that can interfere with good TX/RX - both externally to the van, or because one or more of your sensors has a problem. My Sienna has had two sensors replaced as defective.

What they do respond to very quickly is a strong signal showing pressure loss at speed. My wife experienced that on the highway after hitting a road hazard.

I had exactly same symptoms as TypoPR a few months ago, TPMS light would blink then stay on constantly. I checked all of the tires and they were at 35 psi.
So I took the HL to the Toyota dealership and they found that the left front sensor was reading 0 psi. The sensor was replaced and the system rest under warranty.
I have not had any issues withe the light since.
I hope this helps you.

Just a guess, but they are a pretty common part. And a lot of people put a second set in their winter tires, so I think they would keep them on stock.

But your not going to be happy with the price of a new one... Can easily be over a hundred for one! Plus install and balance!

Too bad tpms can't be turned off instead.

Once again, a stealership markup thing. Plenty of guys buy these things in box lots and sell them for $25 or less per unit on e-bay. I bought 4 new units for my snows for $95. So why are they selling for $85 each at the parts counter?
