Tundra stereo upgrade

Not too many Tundra people on here. I just got an '05 Access cab with 4WD and TRD yesterday. The stock 6 speaker stereo sounds pretty poor. Is is mainly the speakers or are my going to have to change out the head unit? What size speakers are in the doors? Do they connect with just a + and - wire or do they have some kind of funky harness? How hard is it to access them? I was thinking of building a panel (I think it's called an infinite baffle, something like that) and adding an 8" subwoofer or two under one of the back seats, but I'm sure there is no wiring for it back there. Would it be difficult to get wiring back there? If I upgrade the door speakers, will that give me enough bass without adding the sub? I don't need an extremely boomy system but I like to have lows. Will I need amplification if I upgrade the door speakers? I don't even know where I'd stow an amp. Any ideas on any of this?

I have a 05 Tundra double cab. Does yours have the JBL system? I'm not happy with the speakers in mine. Not enough base. My wife has an 04 BMW with 6 speakers and hers, sounds great. I think it is a Harman Kardon system. I found out that the JBL's are Harmon Becvker Automotive Systems (JBL), but they haven't gotten back with me yet. I wanted to know what the specs. are for the speakers. I want to change the rears to get more base. Sorry I don't have an answer for you.

bill,
I don't have the JBL system. Mine is the 6 speaker system. The sound quality is mediocre and I don't have much bass or volume. I've heard mixed reviews of the JBL system. Yours is the JBL? That is interesting you don't have much bass. I thought it had a subwoofer under the back seat. Maybe I'm mistaken. I am still trying to find out what size speakers I have so that I can buy replacements. I think they are 5 1/4s in the doors and 1" tweeters, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know? Also, if I buy replacements, will I need any different mounts or wiring or are they plug n' play?

Not to send you off to another forum, but I'd suggest registering(free) at www.tundrasolutions.com and do a little searching over there, everything is covered in great detail over there.

If you want to keep the stock headunit, I'd suggest the NE-774V from www.davidnavone.com

Figure out a budget that you would like to work with and I might be able to give you some recomendations on stereo stuff.

I'd definitely rec. getting some components up front 6.5" preferably, and at least a 2 channel amp. If you want one amp to run everything, look into a 4 channel or even better a 5 channel.

For subs you have two options that work nicely. The first is the Q logic sub enclosure that allows you two mount two 8" subs in the underseat storage area under the passenger rear seat. If mounting depth will allow it, I'd recomend the Image Dynamics ID8V3 subs from sounddomain for the enclosure.

The other option if you have the center console up front and not the bench is the JL Stealth Enclosure, which comes with one JL 10W3V2

cam2Xrunner,
Thank you for the advice. I am hoping to spend as little $ as possible and try to do the work myself although I don't want to totally skimp and have a crappy sounding system. I can't give a specific amount. I will pay what I need to, but cheaper is better. Against some advice I've heard about used gear, I was thinking of trying to get high quality used gear cheap on Ebay. I found a nice 2x60W RMS Carver amplifier on Ebay, some Infinity tweeters, and there are plenty of good 5 1/4s and 6 1/2s. I understand the stuff won't last as long, but if I can get it up and sounding good, one component goes in a few years, that's ok. I'll replace it and then replace something else the next year, no big deal.
I understand basic concepts of electronics but am unfamiliar with what combinations will and won't sound good, especially in a small enclosure. Also, I am worried about rattling from the stereo. I don't want to take my door panels apart just to see what size speakers I have, so if anyone knows what size they are in the doors, please let me know. It's an access cab with the 6 speaker system. Also, once I have good speakers, is the deck going to sound good, or would I greatly benefit from replacing it too? Where do you suggest mounting amplifiers where they are out of the way? Would the sub sound better under the seat or in the console? Do I really need 2 8's or would one do plenty? I don't need to hear the bass all the way down the street. Any advice would be appreciated.

The best way IMO to buy quality used gear, at very good prices is to buy through the For Sale section at www.elitecaraudio.com http://forum.elitecaraudio.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=4

Ebay is also a good source but you have to know of what to look for.

Check out this page, it has alot of good info for your truck. You might have to be a Tundrasolutions member to view it, but again it's free to register and this page is a MUST SEE for Tundra Owners that want to put in a system.

Here's the Q Logic enclosure for the two 8's.
http://www.cardomain.com/item/QLCQLC1TTX20801 It accomodates two 8's so you would def. need two.

Here's the JL StealthBox
http://www.jlaudio.com/stealthbox/TUNCNSL2.html

Both will work really good, the JL StealthBox is pricey, but is nice. The Q Logic can be really good too if you put the right subs.

I'm pretty sure these subs will fit, but double check the mounting specs.
http://imagedynamicsusa.com/tech_page.php?name=ID8D4 V.3&type=sub&id=id
Even if they are too deep, you can remove the magnet cover for more depth.

They're 93 bucks each shipped here.

These subs work very well in small enclosures, and don't require alot of power to sound good, but they can handle a good amount of power if you want to throw it at them.

I don't know how much you want to spend, so I really can't recomend any speakers or amps, unless I know of a budget, there's just so many things out there for different prices.

the website http://www.tundrasolutions.com/foru...udiofaqmain.htm is awesome. Thanks. Has instructions on taking off door panels, answers my speaker size and mounting depth questions. Have you heard both of these subwoofer options in Tundras before? Which sounds better? 2x8 in the back or 1x8 in the console? The extra cost of the stealthbox is offset by only needing one woofer. Also, with good speakers, how does the OEM head unit sound?

The JL audio stelth box uses a single 10" 10W3V2. It's a good sub. I've never had a chance to listen to either of these setups.

Ideally, I'd look for a JL Stealthbox without a sub and replace it with a stronger sub. But for most people the single 10w3 will be sufficient.

I think the dual 8's might get louder though.

On using the factory headunit, I installed a system in my friends '05 Tacoma using the stock deck and the NE-774V. It turned out really nice, but having an aftermarket deck will allow it to get louder. And there was a very slight amount of background noise when playing the headunit at max volume levels with no music playing. But with music it was very nice.

In that truck I installed DLS Iridium 6.2's and DLA A series amps, all high $ stuff, but you could definitely spend less.

If you want, let me know a budget when you are ready and I'll show you some stuff.

ok here is my plan:
Eclipse cd5444 H.U. running door speakers (no amp, at least not yet)
Old Carver M-2120 125WPC RMS running two Image Dynamic ID8 v.3 8" subs in Q-logic
Infinity Reference components (probably 6010cs)
Infinity Kappa 652.5 in rear doors
I am trying to stay on a budget and still get good sound quality. Do you think these components will all blend together well? Opinions? Suggestions?
