Hi,
Looking for feedback on how useful 3rd row in Highlander. Is it usable for people who are not tall (below 5'6"). Trying to buy suv which can carry 8 people occasionally. MDX is designed with 7 seating capacity. is highlander interior bigger than MDX?

First: depends on the year. I think the first three generations (2006-2019) are all true 2-3-2.

Second: If you fit 8 in a properly-equipped 2020-2022, it will be a tight fit, even for smaller passengers. Leg room is a meager 27 inches, and I think the wheel-well cabin cutouts are 6-7 inches.

See:

If you really need something that will comfortably seat 8, you may need to look into larger vehicles.

Thanks for the image. I think, it can accommodate kids. Image shows decent leg room compared to videos on youtube.

Thanks

My wife had a BMW X5 with a 3rd row, which is even smaller! Believe me, the HiHy isn't that bad with regards to its 3rd row roominess. Many of those Youtube HiHy reviews are a bit ridiculous and exaggerated when they bash the leg room in the HiHy's 3rd row. They just leave the 2nd row pushed all the way back. So, of course that leaves very little room in the 3rd row! Just adjust the second row to allow enough room for the 2nd row and 3rd row occupants. Then, there's a decent amount of room in the 3rd row. I wouldn't have grown adults in the 3rd row for a long road trip. But certainly, adults can sit back there around town. For long road trips, probably best to have kids in the 3rd row only....let the grown ups sit in the 2nd row.;)

I checked out the 2020 MDX but not the new body style that came out a few months ago. I came to the conclusion that both the MDX and Highlander were on the smaller side of the segment, and not different enough to make a difference. In both cases, the hybrid didn't mean sacrificing interior space over the gas model.

If you scoot the 2nd row up a bit and have only adults under 5'10 sitting in the 3rd row, it should be okay for short trips around town. I'm about 5'8-9" and I thought it was fine sitting back there. Pretty much the same experience I had when I chaperoned on my kids' school field trips and I actually had to sit in the regular school bus with three ppl (me, my kid, and another student) in the same row! My knees were right there up against the back of the seat back in front of me. And, those field trips bus rides were often 1-2 hours long each way!
