Venza v6, code P0015 and the annoying Oil Control Valve Replacement

Hey guys, not here very often but my 2010 Venza v6 with around 165,000 miles threw this code earlier this week. Wife drives it 100% so I only get it when something is wrong, which is not very often thankfully.

It threw the P0015 code which is the rear bank (against firewall) and rear most Oil Control Valve, Exhaust side. Of course Toyota wants between $1200-1500 for this job locally and it is an aggravation but not too bad.

I know there are assorted threads on forums and youtube videos but just thought I'd add my personal experience.

I didn't feel like pulling the intake plenum (surge tank) along with the intake system and throttle body so I decided removing the upper/lower cowls was the lesser of the 2 evils.

However, if you're replacing the spark plugs and/or coil packs, I'm sure that removing the plenum would be the way to go.

It isn't difficult to pull the cowl and in my opinion is less of a hassle than having to replace the intake and throttle body gaskets (at least you PROBABLY should on an older vehicle).

So that's what I did, removing the wipers, releasing the upper cowl clips from underneath, wiper motor connector, windshield defroster connector and cowl bolts. Use a flat blade screwdriver or trim fastener removal tool and separate the rubber/plastic cowl end caps that attach the upper cowl to the inside of the fender near the base of the windshield.

Pull it free, disconnect the OCV connector, remove the 10mm OCV bolt and use a small screwdriver or stiff plastc trim tool to pry the OCV loose.

The biggest pain was getting to the bolt using 1/4 ratchet and socket along with a auto mirror and good light for reference. Time consuming if it's your first time but it's doable.

The other issue I found re the Venza 2gr-fe is that once you try to pull the OCV loose, it contacts the plastic wiring loom/container just above it. I pulled the 2 10mm harness loom bracket bolts and the back 10mm bolt which I thought would loosen it but it didn't seem to help. Perhaps that was one of the 2 intake bracket bolts (this bolt installed horizontally, not vertically) but not positive.

Regardless, I was at the point that I wasn't going to let the harness case stop me so I simply pulled up on it while pulling the OCV out and it worked.

Maybe this will help someone out there when deciding which route to take if you're only replacing that rear bank exhaust OCV and getting the P0015 code.
