VIN # Build Check

I was wondering I put a deposit on a '22 Corolla from my local dealer and told the car is "being built". I already have the VIN. Is there someplace I can check with the VIN and see the status of the build and when I might expect it? The dealer is just saying "6-8 weeks".

Thanks!

Yes you can use the VIN determine where it’s being built, no there is no “tracker” or anything like that. Especially if it has a VIN, that means the car is probably damn near finished, but waiting on parts that are in short supply right now. I think your best bet at when it would be done is find out where it is being built via the VIN, and call that factory. But it is extremely unlikely they will be able to tell you anything.

Edit to add that your dealer should have a specific time for you after the car is built and being transported. I don’t image they’ll just call you up one day and go “yo your car is here, come get it”. Mine had to be shipped to my dealer and they gave me an exact pickup date. But that was because mine was done and they did a trade with another dealer so it was already in transport.

Thanks. The Dealership told me it was a Japan built car. First letter of the VIN is "J".

Here's a nice tool in case the car is already built Vehicle Specification | Toyota Owners

Enter the VIN. If it's already made it should show plant of manufacture and "order" (build) date.
Sweet! I think this could be the tool to use. So far is shows some, but not all of that information.

By Toyota standards, one rolls off the assembly line every 60 seconds.

From start to finish, it could be a week.
I think MS runs a touch slower than that, but close enough. For fast runners like RAV4, start to finish is less than 2 days from stamping to sales line...

Well.... good news and bad news. My Corolla was cancelled. Production shortages they just up and cancelled it. He said the VIN I got was a temporary VIN and not an actual VIN. But, they are giving me the next one off the line destined for them which is due to start production in 5 days. Then they say "probably" 4 weeks after that. We'll see. It is the "Ruby Flare Pearl" paint (premium paint) with a black interior.

This is downright friggin' depressing people. There are no new Corollas anywhere. Dealer won't call me back on a status update to see if that Ruby one went to production as stated so I have to assume it did not. Never thought I'd see the day when I had to beg a car dealer to sell me a car. Like Soviet Union back in the 70s.

Ya I waited 3 months for my car a year ago and they had cars on the lot. Now I drive by dealers and it's like a ghost town, except the crappy ones they have lots of cars lol

I just drove to the dealership to talk with the sales manager. The car is listed in their system as reserved for me. He looked up my name and confirmed it. The bad news is he doesn't think it will be here until 11/2. Meaning the $500 cash-back will be over. He did say that the "Toyotathon" will be in effect by then but he is not sure what, if any, discounts will be available. We also got to see 2 new cars on the lot in the Ruby and dang that is a nice color! My daughter was with me she was super-psyched.

Absolutely. There was an article some time ago that showed US car manufacturers being less American than Toyota. At one point Camry was the only true USA car in NASCAR

As a side note: I used to laugh at Chrysler's commercial of Dodge Charger and Challenger with their "Detroit muscle" line, they are made down the hwy from me in Brampton, Ontario...

Ha ha you will probably laugh but yesterday is the first time in my life I have ever driven a Corolla. I didn't test drive it since this wasn't for me. But, I had to go to the store and wanted to try out the car I just bought so I took it for a spin. Very impressed actually for a base model Toyota sure includes a lot. Lane departure, auto brake, adaptive cruise, etc on I think most other brands are a LOT extra. Is the engine turbo? Feels like it is. I especially loved seeing "37 mpg" on the trip meter. I don't think I've ever owned a car that got better than low 20s. My Jaguar XJ was probably the best at around 22. F-150 gets 16 and the Charger 15.

One thing I was getting some groceries and there is no cargo net. Is this something easy to add? Looks like it might be. Any advice what net to get (factory or aftermarket)?

Oh, your wallet will LOVE your Corolla now!! IMO, after the 80s RWD Corolla, this is by far the best Corolla I've driven, and been able to fit into :)

For the cargo net, you can use either OE or aftermarket. I usually for aftermarket, and now have extras kicking around and I make my own hooks as needed...
