2003 V6 AWD 311k miles.
Oh-lordy. Mr. Walker, I've got a bone to pick with you. How is it I replaced the very same muffler purchased 2014 (Walker 53373 Quiet-Flow Stainless Steel Muffler) with the exact same one last week and it did not fit? Miss-manufactured?
1. Inlet pipe flare was over flared so your standard spring bolt kit (also Walker) will not pull up the flange faces tight. Had to substitute my own bolts and trim the springs by two coil turns.
2. Muffler support fingers had burrs on the ends where they had been trimmed in the factory. Impossible to slide into the car's rubber mounts. Had to grind the ends to remove the stinking burrs.
3. Muffler sits "longer" so rear end of muffler contacts my Reese hitch and rattles. Last one did not. I installed a spring to grapple the muffler and tension it forward in it's mounts. This allows for about 3/8 inch clearance at the back now. That fixed that.
4. Holy cow, now the outboard hanger finger at the rear contacts the top of the hitch. Just barely. It sounds like Morse code coming from back there. Dammit!
I had to pull the hitch and get in there and trim an inch off the finger with my saws-all. Which I give to you Mr. Walker, the finger. 🖕
So I have about 2 hours into this install which took about 15 minutes in 2014. What gives Mr. Walker, you forget how to manufacture a muffler to fit? Geez this kinda thing gripes me.

doesn't suprise me. i had a walker resonator that was installed on a camry i had after an accident and it rusted out and fell off after 2 years, replaced with a bosal that had the original proper bends and was better quality. walker is okay as a cheap alternative but with exhaust you get what you pay for

Maybe it's the lack of snow and road ice, where I live but, I'm now wondering if I should at least inspect the condition of my Highlander's muffler--seeing as it's the original, from the factory.

???

With an '04, I am suspicious of things that I haven't directly examined, and the muffler is something that I never think about, since this thing is as quiet as a new vehicle. Will look it over the next time I'm under the rear of the vehicle.

Grand Terrace, actually.

We're still a "small town" (POP: 13850 now, 1250 when I was growing up here.) South of San Bernardino / Colton, and North of Riverside / Highgrove. Nice place to live, actually...well, if you don't mind all the freeway and road work going on around here, for the past few years...and the fact that things have grown-up around us so much that you can't hop on your bike and go target shooting anymore.

Allan G-H so, not much road salt used there huh? You probably have no worries then regarding the Highlander exhaust system.
From my report on reaching 300k miles on my rig: Exhaust system starts to go at about 200k miles. Front exhaust pipe seal ring wears and needs to be replaced. Then the hanger bracket at the last cat breaks off the pipe. Then the front pipe rots out. Then the rear muffler goes bad. Then the center muffler finally goes at about 280k.
Also details on what to do when the last cat pipe gets holes....
See pics at end of post.

Bumping an old thread. My '03 AWD needs the rear muffler - rusting on TOP and just started to leak @ 212K.

Considering:
- Bosal 228-813 Exhaust Silencer / Muffler

- Walker 53373 Quiet-Flow SS Muffler Assembly

Best $: The Walker is $121 on Amazon; the Bosal is $99 on Summit Racing (free shipping from both)

Read on a 4Runner forum the Bosal droned and wore out in under a year. And I read here the Walker may not fit well and may also have durability issues.

Anyone else have an update?

Thanks

dash,
Since I corrected the fitment issues the Walker has been fine. Sound-tone wise it is very similar to the OEM. Maybe even quieter?
BTW- the failure of the first Walker muffler was at the inlet pipe, not the muffler itself. (The original OEM muffler failed in the same place.) The weld rusts and breaks off flush with the muffler body.
2nd BTW- I noticed on the first Walker I put on in 2014 there was a drain hole drilled in the underside on the muffler body just below the outlet pipe. The newest one did not have the hole. So I drilled one myself.
3rd BTW- I have used Bosal parts as well but only on my Audi. They seems like good parts too.
Good luck. Haya....

From what I understand walker is gone but some of there pipes an mufflers are still around the poor guy who gets one My wife’s 2003 Camry the intermediate pipe came in 2 pieces it’s supposed to be 1 piece an the OAL was 8 inch short the catalytic converter had 2 places to put the oxygen sensor it’s only exhaust manifold when I ordered this I wasn’t supposed to be getting walker but they snuck there left over junk in. It gets better My 2000 Toyota Corolla I bought a complete exhaust system from walker they were good at one time did not come close to fitting emailed walker tec went around with them for days final I said make it right or not at all before you kill someone he said will it make you happy if I ask are enginee. He called me this time NO Apolagy at all an said when Toyota changed the model of there Corolla in 2000 they continued to make the exhaust system for the older model .An I replaced another Camry muffler a few years ago an it was almost straight up an down. It’s on my car left right now I will take a picture of it before I take it down. They had no quality control thank god there gone I was told Bosal bought them out

Update on the Bosal I used on my Audi. March 29, 2021. The weld seams rusted through within three years. One of the resonators literally fell off the car. It's still probably lying along eastbound M-6. Since then I ditched, (get it? ditched) the Bosal and went with an API unit. We'll see.
Ha-ha,

Since this thread is back up and Haya mentioned a cat pipe with holes...
My 2009 corolla developed rust holes in the cat where the heat shield was rusted on, so I removed the exhaust (pretty easy, comes out in one piece) and brazed the holes shut with an oxy acetylene torch. It's been working since the summer, with some highway trips so I know the exhaust can't melt the brazing....
Just an FYI, I'm proud of that one!

Mg: Brazing?
Didn't that go out with whale bone corset stays?
Back then frankfurters were just a nickel.

Just kidding. Wish you could braze up the VW cat for me. Same thing happed.
All the best, Haya.... 👍

Come on, Haya! Brazing is all the rage for delicate surfaces you’re afraid to burn a hole in welding. But, my brazing job does need a touch up. There’s a gap forming under one of my repairs. Expansion and contraction, I’m thinking. I think I’ll just jam some furnace cement in there.
Wish I had some of those nickel hot dogs right about now, though.

Frankfurters, just a nickel....that's a line from the Adam Sandler movie "Big Daddy". Haha.

BTW- the V-dub cat was beyond repair. Shell like swiss cheese. Replaced real cheap though....one of those Canada cats I've been harping about.
$145 shipped. Yup, this one.

Not a fun job though. Six-bolt header joint up next to the firewall. Tight, dark, dirty space to work.

Oh and get this in the pic. I found these while trying to fit the right socket up under the header connector. Basically blind. Oh how frustrating!
Do you believe this crap? (I replaced all with 17mm hex nuts, SS off course, in case I ever have to do this again.)
Some dillweed at a shop or the dealership used four different size fasteners. (The cat had been replaced before.) I suspect it was a dealership as the parts were genuine VW. Mean trick. (I'm just glad all six came out.)
Not Happy, Haya.... 😈

Oh ya, this gets better.....so I had to go get some copper RTV for the VW cat replacement job. On the the way to AutoZone the (2nd now) the HL's Walker muffler breaks off at the inlet pipe. Just like the previous Walker and the original Toyota muffler did. Same place.
Okay, I pulled into AutoZone and figured they would have a wire coat hanger or piece of copper tubing...anything...to tie up the loose end of the center pipe so it would not break off. (No they did not have a muffler in stock). The jerkwater kid at the counter would only offer to sell me a spool of wire. A little miffed, I walked out and then secured the loose pipe with a rubber bungee I had in the car while still in their parking lot. (Not my 1st choice as it was smoking by the time I got home.)
Anyway, on the way out of the parking lot there is old jerkwater sucking on a cig. I called him over to the car and said this right into his smug face.

"Hey, it's not that you didn't have something to help me out....it's that you never even bothered to look.
You ever hear of customer service?
You go on and think about that while you have your smoke. Thanks a lot."

Now, Gary, Pat or Sean who are normally at the counter would have helped me out. I'm in there enough.
Not old jerkwater....what is this country coming to?
Haya...

Do you know what auto zone had to go through to even find a jerk water kid willing to show up? They’re probably paying him more than I make!
As for all of your issues with dealerships, I’m glad I do all of my own work!

Post log:
I ended up going to NAPA Auto just down the block. (Walking distance.) Bought my stuff there. I told the two countermen at NAPA about what happened. They were not surprised, mentioned they had heard AutoZone was going downhill lately. Hmm.

Post-post log:
This gets even more bizarre.
I did not want another Walker so last week I purchased via eBay an OCI rear muffler (Nope never heard of that brand before. It's Taiwanese). It never came and I received no order acknowledgement from the vendor. It's like the order never happened. But what's weird, my WIFE's Paypal got charged and it shows paid via a CC she does not even have. Nor never did have. Hmm?

Okay, it looks like it's never gonna show so Monday morning I ordered an API unit directly from Parts Geek.

Wouldn't ya know what shows up the same afternoon? The OCI one. Geez.

Still, as far as we can tell the we never paid for the thing. We never received an invoice, CC charge for it, or Paypal balance deduct.

opportunity here....
I will compare the two and follow up with a report on which at least appears to be the better make. OCI or API. The second one is due Thursday. We'll see. Report to follow. Haya....
What I'm gonna do with the extra muffler I do not know, maybe just keep it.

Conclusion......I'm writing this several weeks later.
This is so weird and somewhat puzzling. The second muffler showed up as scheduled. Listed as API brand by Parts Geek it is actually stamped OES Original Exhaust Systems brand, again I've never heard of that brand before for exhaust parts. And it is exactly the same as the 1st one. Exactly. So I can't really report any comparison. They are exactly the same. Even same packaging.
The muffler appears to be well made and it's hefty. This time I sprayed a couple of good coats of VHT header paint on all the welds, maybe help keep corrosion from forming? I don't know. Install went okay.
We ended up returning the Parts Geek one. They were great and provided a prepaid shipping label. Cool. The $132 has been credited back to us.
As it turns out both mufflers came from Parts Geek. How it was listed as OCI on eBay then Parts Geek actually shipped it is a supply chain mystery. In any case we never received an invoice for the first one and I suspect we never will.
Now if this muffler lasts more that three years, it will be a happy ending. Haha.
Haya....
