Want to buy a Tacoma, please help me understand some things

I've owned many cars and motorcycles and every time I have been an avid forum reader and poster. Online forums are such a wealth of information. I want to be prepared when I buy a Tacoma and I have questions. I do so appreciate your replies.

I read on wikipedia about the 1st Generation vs 2nd Generation (I had a 97' and a 99' way before). From a quick glance (for the untrained eye (me)) the 2006 vs the 2012 don't look drastically different. I know in 2010 the LED taillights and it seems in 2012 a new bumper and some interior changes. I'm sure there are many other items I just don't know.

So here is where I stand:
I want the works. I want 4WD, SR5, V6 4.0L, Double Cab, TRD with alloy wheels, etc. standard bed.

On toyota.com a 2013 priced out with stuff like above is about 32k. I look around and I see people asking stuff like $29,995 or so for 2010-2011 Tacomas similarly equipped. If I am going to spend $30k, I'd spend $32k.

What I don't understand about looking at Tacoma's is how much it is realistically worth, vs what they are asking. I never put much weight in KBB in the past, but perhaps with these its accurate?

Here is an example: Carmax wants 27k for this 2010 Tacoma. It would be 3 years old and 5k less than buying brand new. Is this a good deal? I just would have figured 3 years you see more depreciation. Perhaps if a 2014 is 100% totally redesigned 3rd generation, right?

The Tacoma is very popular, they sell good, have excellent resale value, everybody that now owns a full size pickup wants one as an alternative for better gas mileage. I am also waiting in excitement for the 2014, but the only changes I see so far is direct fuel injection and a turbocharged 4 cyl and maybe AWD. But what matters is the Tacoma hasn't changed much,,, the 2005 is the same, and just as good as the 2013.
Yes,,, its a cult vehicle.

I would just go new... The resale value on these trucks is stupid high. I've seen 2011's with 12K miles on them for more than a nrand new one! It had the certified warranty so had more warranty coverage than the new one did but still, I couldn't imagine paying more than MSRP on a used vehicle.

Just a tip from a guy that sells these vehicles, find out Invoice price on the vehicle you want and work from there. Usually a dealer will take a few hundred dollars above invoice without much of a fight, but you can sometimes get them to go lower. It depends on how desperate they (the managers, not the salesman) are to sell a car.

Good info, thank you.

My friend last month bought a 2013 Corolla. He checked the invoice price and actually ended up getting it a couple hundred less than invoice. He figures they still got money, perhaps from dealer incentive or kickback, etc. but that dealer was motivated to move the Corolla.

Being that little changed over the years, I need to determine if the discount of getting say a 2007 vs 2013 is significant enough that I would want to get a 5-6 year old car with the wear-n-tear already in place. If I could a 2007 with 40k miles for 20k, I think that would be a great deal, but most people drive their trucks so I expect 100k+ miles.

I need to think a bit and research

Thanks for that and I should look at my pay check, as I did get it and see the difference.

I own my Audi outright and my Ducati outright. I love not having a payment, but I am fine with one. I just want to be as informed as possible for this purchase and not throw away money unnecessarily (based on my requirements and needs for this purchase).

just got my first paycheck of the year today right after the tax increase and I figured it out right on the money at $104 less for a 2 week pay,,, so that works out to $208 per month less,,,,, so maybe you need to reconsider IF you can afford a new truck loan payment or not

As you have seen the resale value of the 4X4s so far is just so high that it doesn't make any sense to me to buy a used one anywhere near new. The only reason I can see for someone to buy used is that if their credit wouldn't allow them to buy new. If you have to pay 2-5k more for new over used, to me I'd want to know I was starting with a fresh vehicle. Now if you were going to buy a 5 lug it might be worth looking at used.:) (I own one)

The only reason I buy a new one over a used one is because I never trust the person that owned the vehicle before me IF he took care of it or not, for an example maybe he ran a 5W20 oil instead of a 5W30.
A new vehicle feels more like you own it, its yours and you can control how to take care of it yourself.

If you can get a dealer to deal on a new one then invoice price is about $3,000 below MSRP. So that's the range you have to negotiate in.

Of course, whether or not a dealer will come down that far will depend on their inventory and the amount of demand they're getting.
