Pick the long or the short explaination, whatever will result in your help. ;)

Long: About a year and a half ago I received an '87 Pickup (2WD, Carb) for free :D from a family friend. The truck had ~135K miles on the odometer, and was in pretty good condition. The body is, obviously, rusting through a bit, but it's in decent shape. I drove it for the good part of a year, and then the starter died on me. I had someone (uncle, a mechanic) rebuild the starter for me, and it worked great. Another few months go by, and then I ran into a problem. As I was driving, it just kind of died. Electrically. I would like to fix it up, but have been pushing it off and pushing it off because I had another car to drive. I really want to fix it up for two reasons: to learn about fixing vehicles, specifically this one , and to get it running again so I can sell my current car.

Short: I think my alternator/wiring needs replacement.

About how much should/will this cost me?
What parts do you recommend?
How hard would it be to do myself?

Lemme know if you need more info... thanks.

The alternator is cheap and easy to replace. Why do you think the wiring needs to be replaced?
Well I know for a fact that one of the wires is pretty much destroyed, and I believe its the one going to the positive terminal of the battery.

If I would drive in the rain, go faster than 50, and hold the clutch in to coast down a hill or something, it would stall. Let the clutch go and it would come back to life.

The truck only has ~140K miles on it, isn't that like, breakin it in for these Toyotas? The engine ran fine, tranny worked beautifully, and there isnt much else to this truck.

I stopped driving it when I would turn the ignition and just hear clicking. Now that I think about it, could a dead solenoid be the problem?

First the wire beon repair , the stalling would seem to be a leaking vac line this would be sucking in air and allow the motor to run below the needed ideal speed ... I run into a problem with my 88 4x4 stunbling and stalling other then this runnng fine .... the fuse box under the hood has fuses that may croad and in doing so do not make a ood contact you can pull them and clean them replace them and see if this helps with the problem

Can use something like no oxe to keep them from croading I would also check the fuses in the cab as well for blow outs befor making the call on the rest . if all this is good you will need o check for spark this can be done with the help of a friend truning the motor over after pulling the number one plug wire and and putting a screw driver in the end of it and placeing it next to block as motor rolls over should see spark jumping off the driver to the block . If fuses are good and no spark this could be the inqniter that sets on the fender wall under the coil .

To buy one if it was bad new they are over 300 bucks so would pay to find a good one out f a junk yard.... check the vac lines for cracks you may have to remove them and bend them for sometimes the cracks and holes do not show untill doing this .

Let me know if this helps you fond the problem hope it is just a need for you to clean up the fuse like was my problem but gives you a few spots to check . my truck has 235000 and still runs like a top not even burning oil .

Well, I cant really check the spark because the engine doesnt turn over... like... it's not that the starter is turning and the motor wont fire, I turn the key and it just clicks a lot. That and the battery is dead right now...

Yeah, this truck is just a baby, that's why I want to fix her. :(

This thread is a little old, but I just wanted to update. I took apart the whole electrical system around the engine fuse box, and replaced that wire that was messed up. I also removed the alternator, and tested it at Advance auto. They said it was only outputting about 12V instead of the proper ~15V. I got a new one, and put her in. Charged the battery up, and dumped a little bit of gas in the carb. Turned the key. BOOM. Fired right up like it never missed a beat. I was pretty excited.

Now the only problem appears to be the fuel gauge. It isn't registering any gas in the tank (it doesn't move from the "off" position). Could the probe just be stuck? Any way to fix it? And lastly, how can I check to see if there is gas in the tank... just put a hose in it or something and see if it gets wet?

hey ther ei got my 88 2wd ext cab for free too over three years ago

127k on it when i got it

needed a timing set a year later in which was dirt cheap and easy

and then last spring the original alternator died so i stuck an old style chevy one on it that i had laying around cuz a new correct one was over 100 bucks, way more than i was willing to spend for just an alternator

now it has aboput 12k more miles on it and it has been great but the rear frame is rotted out all the way through really badly and its too bad because it run like brand new it will probably run forever but the frame wont last

im not going to attempt to weld repair a rusted out frame, that would be really stupid.

so its on borrowed time aanyways, unfortunately, and theres no way around it,
unless i magically found a solid frame

in which will not happen in IL these trucks and well any vehicles this old are rare

if you are good with tools and mechanical work then you can pretty easily swap to an old chevy alternator but it will be very close to the steering column rag joint and can rub a little

the only bracket you have to make it a new top one and its straight flat and easy to make out of an old chevy alt bracket

i used an old straight six chevy alt top bracket its flat and shaped like a strap a hole in both ends

and change the wire ends to the common crimp on ring style ones and to the female spade ones

real simple easy

the battery shop checked it out after i did it and said its working great, they liked what i did haha

and cost zero dollars and now al the lights are super bright and wow its nice

has been great

fuel guage sending units in these trucks rust badly and freeze up

just like mine did

happens all the time

mine i have never replaced still even after over three years of searching for one

cant find a good one anywhere

i been running around all this time with no working guage

never a problem never run out never bene stranded

dosnt use much gas so its like impossible to run out and get stranded so as long as you do the math when you put gas in it before a trip

i use 15mpg as my guide

and put as many gallons in as i need to go after dividing the miles the trip will be by 15

always works great

who needs a fuel guage ??

only dumb ppl do

good luck
