First I would like to say this issue has never happened until today.

This morning I turned on car everything is fine, I drive about 3 mins and all of a sudden my car dies on a stop light while idling. I try to turn it back on, it would start but it is only able to idle for a split second before it dies again.

I push it to the side of rode. For about 30 mins I try to start the car but it just would not hold idle it would die 1-2 seconds later after car starts. So I tried starting it and giving it gas, but it would just sputter and die immediately. I ended up walking home and left it alone for 10 hours while researching on the problem.

So I decided first thing I would do is clean the IAC/throttle body.

So after leaving the car for 10 hours, I just wanted to see if it would start and idle fine again. Long behold it starts up and idles perfectly fine...I was even able to drive it to autozone which was just 1 block away to buy the throttle body cleaner. As soon as I got their it died again :crying:

So I ended up cleaning the IAC/throttle body(very dirty) I start it up and let it idle. It idled fine for about 2-3 mins before it died again. So it seems the IAC/throttle body was not the problem. But this time I did notice I was able to rev the engine and keep it at 3k RPM without it dying. When I let it idle again it died 1 minute later.

So now here is the weird things that started to happen. I tried to drive it home, I started noticing my front lights would stay off I had to turn it back on. Then sometimes only one front light would stay on.... so I would jsut turn it off and turn it back on and both would stay on again. While trying to drive it home it would die every 1-2 mins. Sometimes I was able to drive it for about 1 minute before it dies. And sometimes I would start it and as soon as I pressed the gas pedal it would die... Sometimes I can start it up REV it to 3k RPM but as soon as I idle it dies. So I started to notice if I wait a little longer before starting it up again I am able to press the gas pedal without it dying and drive it for 1min before it dies again.

Just wanted to say that I never had any check engine lights before this happened. But I did notice that the yellow check engine light would turn on now when the car is about to die, but no check engine light when the car is running.

Can anyone give me an input of where I should start? Thank you

If you have observed the CEL being on, no matter if it stays on or not, you should be able to have a code scan performed, and get a code number.

... Engine stopping at a stoplight is characteristic of a problem with the high voltage spark system. However, it could also be something as simple as cleaning the cable connectors on the battery terminals.

... You have the OBDII diagnostic system, right? It should be easy to have a code scan performed. Any auto parts store will be able to do this for you.

Its weird while I was at autozone I asked if they could use the OBDII on my car and they said they only sold it now. They said they stop giving free code scanners. I just checked the prices on them they are very expensive....

Yup doing that now, the lights flickering and stuff could be caused by loose negative connection. I notice that no matter how tight I tighten the negative connector I can still wiggle it loose. So I am headed to autozone to buy a terminal lead shim to get a better fit.

So today I cleaned all my grounds and used a negative terminal shim to get the connectors tight.

While I was cleaning my grounds I realized it was a good time to go ahead and rebuild my starter since it was getting hard and harder to start the car. (I had a new plunger and contacts sitting around for 6 months was to lazy to replace). My contacts were so worn out, their were barely any contacts left. Only took me an hour to rebuild and put back, pretty happy since it was my first time.

Everything seems to be fine now, drove the car for about 30 minutes straight. I spent another 15 minutes just turning the car on and driving it a few minutes and turning it back off.

Well hopefully the problems have been resolved. Only Time will tell.

The problem happened again today just randomly. I was about to park at a grocery and my car just stalled out. Started the car again but could not hold idle. I had to push car and park it manually. I got fed up and just went ahead and call my mechanic.

5 Hours later mechanic and I come back to car and of course the problem is not present. We keep the car on for 30 mins atleast and even drive it around parking lot and it still did not stall.

He checked everything and he came to a conclusion. He said my IAC needs to be replaced or to save money completely remove it and clean it thoroughly. He said the problem will always be intermittent if I just leave it alone.

He recommend me to use CRC/Non-chlorinated brake cleaner from autozone when cleaning the IAC after removing it.

Going to do this tomorrow morning, hopefully this solves my issues.

After removing the IAC and cleaning it I had no problems for almost a month. Few days ago it seemed to happened again. Just died at a stop light. But I was able to turn it on right away and drive home. I parked it in garage and never drove it again.

Bought a Infiniti g35 2005 same day and have no regrets. Selling the Camry after I replace the IAC valve.

Buy an "ELM 327" reader. They're less than $20 on Amazon. They offer a cabled version and one with bluetooth. Both come with the necessary software to run them.
