Hello everyone, firstly i would like to thank You for letting me in :) and now about the problem I have and cant sleep well at nights. Camry '07 2GR-FE. I can hear some kind of grinding noise that gets pretty loud when the vehicle warms up to its operating temperature. I can hear it the most exactly through the cars radiator at that side where the serpantine belt sits. I asked my mechanic what could it be he listened and told me that its probably a going out power steering pump since i bought the vehicle the power steering fluid was leaking through the return line and was low on fluid. I changed the fluid to dexron IID but still the same. I can feel vibration through the steering wheel when turning when the car isn't moving but mechanic said it could be like this due to bad steering rack that has movement. Iam really afraid of the serpantine belt to break off and the car to overheat. My mechanic told me that i should wait until the sound is more audible and then look for whatever is making that noise. Is it possible for this vehicle that one of the pulleys can seize up and break off the serpantine belt? And what if the belt breaks off for example but I notice it in no time and stop the vehicle asap? Can I avoid myself the car to overheat if i notice or hear how serpantine belt snaps and switch off the ignition? I mean even if i dont hear how the belt breaks i will notice the alternator light light up right away? I have a pretty big trip soon and dont have time right now to fix it. I've had a few times before to hear how a bad pulley bearing is whining and it was really different sound from what I have today. And im pretty sure how a bad steering pump whines when its bad. Maybe this one can make a different sound? And its not whining i would call it more like grinding and gurgling. I may put a video here some day, just really busy these days and worrying a lot. Maybe you will find it funny, but at first when i heard this sound i thought it was because of water-cooled transmission and that maybe there was a bearing in the transmission going bad so the sound somehow went through the coolant and it was the best way to hear it through radiator. I will appreciate all the comments so i can calm down or worry more :)

I've made a review on other topics. Recently found one with the drive belt squealing when you put your car in drive while the a/c is on. I have the exact same issue. So comming to conclusions that i have the same issue. By the way my steering wheel vibrates when im turning it and when the engine has low rpms so im guessing the drive belt is jumping and causing it feel that way. And the sound it has through the radiator, well i believe it comes from a shot tensioner bearing since its been jumping for a while. If not my busy schedule, i would have fixed it already, but will update you how it went out. I have bad bushings on the right side in lower control arm. So im thinking to change the bushings and since this control arm will have to be removed there will be more space to check all drive belt pulleys

Quick update. Have been to my mechanic today to inspect the noise since it is louder now but he has no clue what is wrong he told me that i should drive the car until it is actually audible because now it is hard to identify which pulley could be making the noise.. I can feel the vibration through the steering wheel, sometimes its fine, sometimes i try to turn it as little as possible, because of how bad the vibration is. And by the way I was told that i have movement in my steering rack. Not horizontally, but vertically, i didn't know it can wear out like this, because I always thought there is a problem in rack and

Something's not right, here. It sounds like you are talking about several different things at once, and you are likely dealing with several different issues. You might want to find a different mechanic, as the one you are going to isn't able to figure this out. If it's causing you a lot of stress, that's probably the best course. And if you're feeling it in the steering, that could potentially be dangerous.

I'm not sure how a rack could have vertical movement. Is it properly bolted to the subframe?

I've heard a bad power steering pump can cause a whining sound, but I've never heard this sound firsthand. I have experienced a failing water pump, which was more of a soft metallic sound, and a failing compressor, which was more of a grumbling. Something is dying in that area, but a competent mechanic should be ale to figure it out. And somebody telling you "there's movement in the rack" isn't really saying anything. Movement how? From what? Did they offer a real diagnosis and give you a quote on the work?

Yeah, you might want to try a different mechanic.

The mechanic told me that the way the steering rack has movement isn't causing any danger, and for a driver steering feels tight there isnt any "dead zone" it just has some clunking sound when you turn your steering wheel from left to right speedily. I finally managed to put a video on YouTube so You maybe can help me to identify where the sound could be coming from: Toyota Camry 2007 3.5 metallic sound through radiator where serpantine belt is
