Weird transmission trait...does yours do this?

I have a 2010 V6 FWD. If I drive in sport mode the trans is very responsive and I find it very smooth in drive. The weird trait is that when I am at higher speeds in 6th gear and floor the throttle to pass the engine seems to rev a lot without about a 1-2 second lag until the trans hooks up and the car accelerates. It feels like a slipping clutch. In all normal driving and kick downs at lower speeds it does not do this. Any ideas or similar experiences?

For me its the opposite - Shifting up is fine. Shifting down I feel there is a lag even if I am in the correct speed zone for that gear. Has anyone noticed that lag shifting down?

Scenario: You are coming to a sudden stop - say at a light. You shift down (4,3,2,1) and are braking at the same time, but the car isn't shifting down as fast as you'd want it to.
I have the 2010 I4-AWD.
I asked the dealer and they said it's normal...

Yes, I've noticed that too. It seems to only downshift at a certain RPM, regardless when you shift.
I also checked again today the downshift at highway speeds and noticed it is much faster than it used to be. Maybe the transmission needs to be broken in or "trained" for a while. I have almost 30,000 km on mine.

Simple answer is No!

Don't think of this Sport mode. Think of it as Select mode.

In S mode, the tranny will shift down to lower gears, but will not shift higher than the selected (displayed) gear. So, if you use S, and down shift to 1st, it will stay in 1st.

In some cars, the Sport mode changes the shift profile and sharpens the shifts. That is not true of the Venza. In the Venza it is just a manual override that limits the upper gear choice to the displayed number.

Hey all,

Just wanted to post a little something about my experience with my 2010 Tacoma 4X4 TRD Offroad.
I have had this vehicle for about a year and really love it. Got a lift kit with some 285's with full grill guard, truck looks great!!!! Every since I owned it I have had rough shifting at speeds below 20 MPH and lunging when actually stopped. After multiple time to the service toyota service dept they said that this vehicle just runs like that. Well, I pretty much had enough so I called the Corp Service and explained my issue and they immediatley issued me a case number and refered me the the liasson at the local Toyata dealer. Long story short I showed up at the dealer the next day and they treated me like a movie start. They researched any T-SB's for my vehicle and they found T-SB-0393-09 ( ECM Calibration-Enhgancement to Shifting Performance and Smoothness). Basically, it states:

To enhance shifting performance and smoothness below 20 MPH during 2-1 downshift on vehicles equipped with an A750 transimission. The engine Contro Module calibration has been revised.

After they put the computer on my vehicle it showed that it already had this TSB installed on my truck. I told them that I wanted the TSB to be reinstalled and a Flash done to my onboard computer. They did it and the truck runs better than ever and the bad shifting had totally been rectified.

Hope this helps

Go to dealer and inquire about any Toyota Service bulletins that may not have been loaded. I have a 2010 tacoma offroad v6 4wd and I had downshifting issues. They found a TSB (Shifting performance while downshifting at low speeds). My computer said i already had it download prior to my purchase (new), but I told them to flash my computer and reinstall. It fixed the problem.

Well, I guess I'll throw my 2 cents in. My downshifts are quick, there is no lag. However, it will not shift down if the sensors in the transmission detect that I'm traveling to fast to for the transmission to make a safe downshift. The transmission protects itself from damage and waits for the speed to come down to a point where it can safely make the downshift.

On the other hand I think I remember reading in the manual for manual up shifts do not take your foot off the gas. I used to have a delay up shifting because I would let up off the gas when shifting. You can't treat it like it was a true manual tranny.

I use my downshift all the time to check my speed. I got used to doing it with my last vehicle, which had electronic overdrive. I live in a valley, so we always are going uphill or down.

This is my first Toyota.. are their transmissions normally clunky when cold.. I find the shifts overly firm.. thought it would be better after break-in..but now I have over 2000kms on it and its pretty much the same.

I also notice that somtimes it will shift very well the entire trip.. and sometimes it will shift poorly.. on and off. (these are only on upshifts.. and not in manual mode).

tranny issues

hi, I have a 2010 4 cycl fwd venza, mine revs way up when running under the cruise mode. It caused the tranny to go out right around 34k miles on it, seems or acts like it's slipping, the local shop said no problem. I kept driving it and i was left along side the road. They put a new tranny in it and it was fine up till 80k miles, its doing the exact same thing. When shifting up it revs up till almost 6k sometimes, not all the times and then slips or shifts into gears. Driving in wv is a real pain with the hills etc..the same under power motor keeps making the tranny get a work out, shift manual etc but it's a problem..Mine goes back in the shop again on friday for this issue again...My guess is it's tranny time again or ill be sitting along the road again...

Is it me or is the shifting crappy in my Venza?

I have a 13' V6 AWD and hate the way it shifts. If I floor it, there is a long pause and then the vehicles falls flat on its face and accelerates rather slowly (relative to what it should actually be doing). However, if I ease into, and it drops gears properly, then it accelerates decently. It just doesn't seem to drop down gears properly if I accelerate quickly.

I can't figure out if its the gearing or if its the drive-by wiring on the TB that is causing the delay.

Also, when its cold I notice the shifts are a lot harder until it warms up.

Am i the only one? I wonder if I should take it into the Dealer for review.

Don't know if you have an I4 or the V6 but I have to say I've never floored my 2012 V6 as it gives outstanding acceleration at only 1/2 to 3/4 throttle.

If your vehicle accelerates differently between half and full throttle as you say I would bring it in and have it checked.

It could very well be the Star System monitoring for sudden acceleration and bogging down the throttle.... There is a recent thread where someone bought and installed an interface to correct this condition. Also, if you are not already aware, the Enzo has an adaptive transmission and learns your habitual shift points. So, if yunfpdrie it hard it will anticipate you shift points.

This has been going on for years with the 6 speed automatic trans. I had the problem with my '07 Camry. It's called a shift/flare. Most people never notice it or experience it. It depends on your style of driving. They replaced two trannies and reprogrammed them twice for me and it would still happen occassionally. It's something you'll have to live with or should i say put up with. If you do a search you'll find a few posts, by myself and others who have experienced the same problem over the years.

There is no such thing as "sport mode" When you "floor" the Venza there is a delay --see other posts in this forum how to get around this (in my view not a good idea). Also if you "downshift in selector mode it will change gear and slow the vehicle (if the gear selected is too low it will indeed "beep")
