Wet Carpet: Clogged A/C Drain?

Hello All,

I own a '96 Avalon and have noticed that the passenger carpet is soaked. I thought the last heavy rain somehow came through a cracked window or it came through the front air windshield vents, but we've now been in a drought for some three months here in Texas and the carpet should have dried out by now. The carpet is still soaked and now I suspect that the a/c condensor drain tube is clogged. Any ideas where the tube inside the car is located? If not, where from the outside is the tube? I know I'll need to crawl under, but with just looking with a mirror, I can't seem to see the tube from the bottom of the carriage. Any help is greatly appreciated.

when i first started reading this...i thought...where in texas are you that your getting rain??? lol you may need to jack it up and get under for a close inspection. it definately sounds like a clogged drain. my '00 the tube comes down close to the firewall slightly on the passenger side from center.... oh... and if you see any rain in texas.....send it this way!!!

Thanks, SilverXLS!

Hi SilverXLS,

I'm down in Austin, TX and it hasn't rained in a few months. The last time it did rain hard it was, maybe, June and my wife thought that some rain came in through the front air vent or she left a window cracked. As you may know it hasn't rained since and we're in a terrible drought.

In any case thanks for the tip about the drain hose location. I'll need to pull up the passenger carpet and take a look tomorrow on my day off for Labor Day.

Thanks again,
Jack

The drain hose is right next to the first cross member behind the engine. I'd try blowing it out with compressed air. It could have mold buildup in it. or the hose could have possibly come off. I'd try spraying it out and if that doesn't work then tear into the exchanger unit. It seems to me that it would be in front of the glovebox. I know the blower is there.

Found It!

Hello Everyone,

Thanks for all of your tips. I found the a/c drain hose. It was on the passenger side fairly close to center. Yes, indeed the hose had mold in it and I simply removed the hose and shoved a pipe cleaner up into the a/c condenser box and a lot of water spilled out. Luckily it's been hot and so the carpet is almost dry so that I can put it back down. Thanks for all of you fellow's help.

95 Avalon wet carpet front passenger floor

I seem to have the same problem - soaking wet carpet on the front passenger side. From reading the above threads I'm having trouble visualizing where things are. I have the carpet pulled up right now and a fan running to dry it out. Where is it that I'm looking for the drain and where exactly is the AC condensor unit that was referred to? Are these things all inside the passenger compartment or is something also in the engine compartment? I have a shop manual but it doesn't depict the AC drain anywhere so I'm blind on this. Thanks.

Location of a/c drain tube

Hi Ker,

On my '96 Avalon, the drain tube is located on the upper left side of the passenger side. I had to pull the carpet back away from the side of the center console (if you were in the passenger seat, it's the left side of the console) to expose the tube. In effect, it's just to the upper portion against the firwall of the center console very close to the left passenger side. It's easy to miss if you just pull up your carpet and not pull the carpet away from the side of the console too. I just lifted the carpet up and have had a fan on it all day. It's been hot outside and so the carpet is almost dry. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Jack. :)

AC drain problem

Thanks for the response. I found the drain tube and pulled it and it is clear. I ran something up into the AC condensor and it seemed to be clear also. So now I'm not sure what the problem is. I plan on routing the drain tube into a container on the floor and running the ac to see if anything is coming out of the drain tube. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Leaking rear vent ductwork

I seem to have traced the leak to the underside of the plastic duct that supplies air to the rear compartment floor vent. Who would have though that? Anybody ever seen that before? I guess I will try to pull that and see if it can be repaired. Since it is not under pressure maybe some kind of patch might work. All ideas welcome. Thanks.

it would seem to me that it is leaking at that air duct because it is not draining properly. are you sure you ran something into the drain hole far enough? down at the local craft store they have these sorta pipe cleaners that are a foot long....great for cleaning out bbq burner tubes and many other things, like the drain. i always keep some on hand.

Thanks for your response. You are right. There should be no water in the ductwork. Obviously something is not draining. I will try to get some of the pipe cleaners you describe and have a go at the drain opening again. I don't know the inside of this condensor/exchange system to even be able to figure out how to troubleshoot it. Thanks again.:headbang::headbang::headbang:

I inserted both a long plastic cable tie and a long pipe cleaner and encountered no obstructions and drained no additional water. I guess my next step is some compressed air up the drain tube. If nothing after that I guess I'm down to pulling the blower motor so that I can open the evaporator cover to see what is going on inside. Sure hate to do that much work if there was an easier way but I'm not sure what that would be. :headbang:
