1. What’s a common cause for Reverse to stop working in a 1999, 4 Cyl Camry? I changed the filter, cleaned the pan and added a new gasket about 90,000 mi and all looked fine and worked fine
.
2. It possibly had 150,000 – 170,000 when reverse stopped working after being owned by two other family members. Drive works fine vs no reverse is what I’m told.

3. My past experience related to no reverse was a bad seal in a 1976 Ford (twice). Related, the Dealer said if the Camry’s Trans fluid w/n changed at 30,000 mi recommended, do not or it would probably start to leak. That why I only topped the fluid after servicing the trans.

... possibly not related ... a good idea though

Here is a thread about the neutral safety switch maintenance.

I can't guarantee that it will fix your problem ... but you ought to perform this maintenance ... just so you can eliminate as a possible cause of your problem.

Actually, on the front of the NSS, there is a cable from the gear selector of transmission which you need to inspect ... to be sure that it is in the correct position... has not slipped or anything.

Also, your ignition and possibly other electrical items may function better, if you clean the interior copper electrical contacts ... within the NSS. I used plastic safe electrical contact cleaner, some fine emery cloth, some new silicone dielectric grease ... also lube the perimeter gasket, but don't break it. Stretch the two small wiper arm springs slightly before reinstalling ... but don't let them fly off.

I have suggested that they take the car to a Toyota Specialist. Plus, I read per Haynes Manual that the trans possibly will provide codes on the problem. Most of all I feel a Specialist has seen this and will have a good sequence of troubleshooting.

Hopefully this issue will be solved this week and I’ll share the results. Thanks To All!
