There was a time when the saying was "When all else has failed, then read the manual" now, why try and find something when you can ask on zee web

Yes everyone here is very helpful.
Nom wait, no you weren't. Not at all.
I did not have access to the car nor the manual when I posted that.
I got an alert on my phone that the car was unlocked while my wife had it at the store and she was asking me.
And still no one answered the question and several people either didn't know or got it wrong.
So I guess it wasn't a dumb question.

I answered the question two days ago:
The button on the left closes the tailgate.
The button on the right closes the tailgate and locks the doors.
Sorry that you got so many rough responses though. It's tough with a brand-new car, especially if you might not have had time to read through the 500+ page owners manual yet.

Hopefully you will have a bit more time to explore (and enjoy) your new Grand Highlander over the coming weeks.

If you ever find yourself without the car/manual, know that you can always get a copy of it electronically from Toyota's website. In the top menu bar, hover your cursor over the 'owners' tab and select 'manuals and warranties'. It will let you download an electronic copy of the manual.

:)

That's what I thought too.
But as I explained in my original post when the hatch is open and I hit that button all it does it beep at me and then nothing.
Then I hit the other button on the left and the hatch closes as you would expect.
But apparently doesn't lock the car,

It always surprises prizes me that people will call out a person for a question, telling them to read the manual, instead of just answering the question. I guess if you don’t know the answer, it must make you feel like you’re a genius if you make someone else feel inferior. Real sad some folks have to make others feel that way about a question.

This rewards laziness.

It is one thing if OP said I perused the manual and said:
1) there was NO mention of the function, then a response would be appropriate.
2) doesn't understand what was said in the manual b/c manuals can be horribly written.
3) English is my 2nd language and google translate did not translate it well for me to understand.

Reward EFFORT, not laziness.

No question is dumb, is the biggest lie. It's like people dont want to say that the baby is ugly, when it is. Now the baby may grow out of ugliness, or beauty standards may chamge later, or plastic surgery when the baby reaches adulthood, etc.

We can agree to disagree, and life will continue for both of us, and we shall live happily ever after.

Surprises me how some people can't be bothered to open the Owner's Manual to learn how the car operates and how the OPs question conveniently came up when both the manual and car were out of reach 🤔.

As previously posted, download the PDF manual for easy searching and save the hard questions for the forum.

As said above: This rewards laziness.

Also, I did know the answer!

If OP had stated in the message that he did not have access to the manual at the time then of course my answer would have been different.
I gave the OP the page number to start reading in the manual. I was not going to type out what was 2 pages of instructions in the manual.
Maybe I would have posted the PDFs if again OP stated he did not have access to such a manual.

I agree that reading something 500 pages long is not fun especially when you may not need ½ the info ever, but then you might someday.

Hand a man a fish and you've fed him for a day.
Teach him to fish and you've fed him for life.

With a PDF download and CTRL-F, the OM is really, really fast to get answers from. I have PDF copies of the OM for every car I, my family or close friends own.

Separate hatch lock?Doesn't it act like child lock or 3rd row children? Granted I own more stupid 4runner thank goodness. I know if my hatch shuts and doesn't latch, all kinds of crazy lights come on to get your attention. System won't hardly let you do anything you shouldn't or tear anything out. It just sets of check engine, Trac, 4wd lo light off. For a gas cap. I guess they don't want me driving to far and destroying the environment with bad gas cap. Most things are in the owners manual nobody reads

  • Benefit of owning a 1991 Toyota Pick-up Truck: hand-crank windows, no onboard espresso maker, and for sure no "mystery buttons" that send me fishing through the Owner's Manual
P.S. I endorse keeping this Forum User-Friendly, to avoid ridiculing Members for asking questions. Owner's Manuals aren't always at-hand. Leave "dumb-question" shaming to FaceBook-- in my "DIY Plumbing for Morons" one genius told me to "Hire a professional Plumber"-- in a Do-It-Yourself Group!

I have to read mine constantly. My first 5th gen and at 2013 it still does things I don't understand. I recommend manual because working at a dealership people drive 100 miles to ask what they had an answer for. I don't think I am handicapping or belittling anyone for advising owners manual. I know Toyota has a simple,or somewhat simple, explanation. I'm not used to all this technology. There's a lot to be said for a $2500 4wd to abuse instead of a good vehicle. Only stupid question in military is one not asked. That is one you will need the answer for. I am not shaming anyone just passing on my Toyota experience from my mistakes and lessons.

Not always. My was originally written in Chinese, translated in to Japanese, then translated again by the Italian spaghetti writer and finally in to English. I drive RAV4 Prime. Even Index is all screwed up.
Yes but you are driving second fastest Toyota after Supra. You knew that right?

Like most their accessories

Canada is beautiful but I would have to have a winter and summer 4runner salt is so bad. I couldn't pay $50k to rust something out.

I think they were covering the international bases. They had a Corolla GR hybrid in Europe 2 years before we got with 6 speed GR.
