What engine can I safely swap for my 2009 Toyota Camry

I just bought a 2009 Camry from a mechanic and the engine died. I wish to know what year engines I can safely replace the failed engine with. He wants to replace it with a 2005 Camry engine that was previously having problems. Also I am hearing bad things about the 2007 and 2009 engines. Should I avoid them? I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks

When you say dead, what does that mean? Ran low on oil, timing chain jumped, overheated?

If this is a 4-cylinder don't bother searching for a used engine. the 2005 model year you are referring to has the head bolt issue. If it has overheated you're looking at a new short block. I wouldn't trust a 2005 2azfe. 2007 - 2009 have the piston rings issue. If you have a bore scope you can check for damage on the used engine's cylinder walls but if it doesn't have it yet, it probably will unless you see grey silicone and not black peeking out the cracks of the valve cover and timing cover. Then MAYBE the engine had the pistons and rings replaced by Toyota.

I am going through this now and I can tell you that I spent months researching the options. I went through the scrap yards with my scope and I found one engine worth pulling. By the time I got back with my tools someone else was already pulling it! I ended up replacing the short block and cylinder head instead of buying a reman or installing a used engine. That was the only way I could be certain that I wouldn't be back in this situation again in the next few years.

If you are fortunate enough to have a V6 then you can ignore everything I just said.

If the rest of the car is in good condition, then it may be worth putting an engine into. If you find a 2.4 pulled from a 2007-2008 Camry that was built in Japan, those are great engine; they do not have the oil burning problems. The US models were notorious for that problem. If you can’t find a JDM engine or a good reman I would sell the car as is. A 2005 engine would bolt straight in however they did have the head bolt issues like mentioned earlier, not anywhere near as severe as the 2002-2004’s; but enough to where I wouldn’t swap one in. I would trust an oil burning AZ over one with head bolt problems.

a 2azfe from 2002 to 2009 will work, however to make the 02 to early year 04 work ya have to reuse the knock sensor and coolant temp sensor from the 09 everything else is the same. the 02 to early 04 us built motors had the head bolt issue, late 04 to 06 had 0 issues and 07 to 09 us built had oil issues. its best to find a jdm engine and swap it in but only get one from a camry. other models will work but you would have to swap timing cover and other stuff over
