2.7 4 cyl or 4.0 6 cyl?

What is under your hood, 2.7 or 4.0?

As you can tell from my handle, I am planning on a 2.7.
On the street and at the dealer the 4 cyl seems really rare and certainly most of the discussion here is all about the 6 cyl.
So Folks what do you have under your hood?
What are you seeing on the street and dealers?
Has anyone seen any sales or production figures?

I say step on up and go for the 6cyl.... My last truck was a 4 banger and just everything from haveing to get all the way into her to merge traffic or not being able to tow when the need arises *big part of my reason for moveing over to the taco* As for mpg... not really loosing that much with the 6... not haveing to get so far into it just to get into and around traffic wasting alot less... at least in my case.... just don't think trucks should come with 4cyl

have you driven the new 2.7? it definitely does not lack in power, i can merge into traffic perfectly fine.

The power was fine until I took up a pretty long, steep hill on the test drive. It wasn't terrible but put a load in the back and well.... that was all she wrote.

It's all been gone over before but the MPG/HP trade-off it wasn't worth it to me. And for $1500, I couldn't pass up the extra 80 horses.

I also plan on buying a small boat in the near future. V6 for me.

My father wouldn't let me get the 4-cyl, two things he was going to force me to get was the V6 and the Double Cab and here I am happy as a clam. I have no complaints and thinking back on it now he was prolly really smart for making me do that cause I like to drive around my friends a lot and the access cab wouldn't cut it. I also may be hauling around my uncles Sailboat this summer too so I guess it was good I got the V6.

I heard the V6 requires premium fuel.

I don't have to haul or tow anything so I'll take the 4 mpg more I get with my super dependable 4 cyl. Come to think of it, why did I buy a truck?

I don't need the extra 80 horses, I have a Ferrari to drive like an assh0le in. That thing gets great gas mileage. I completely blow the $2.50 I'm saving every week with my 4 banger.

I have a 2.7 in my other taco and its only a reg cab. I keep thinking about S/C just so it can get out of its own way. I dont know how the new bigger body trucks take to it.

It doesn't...premium is "recommended" but not required. I use Regular and I haven't seen any drop in Mileage vs Premium.

i just bought 2.7 and i love it. i traded in my 94 camry (v6) and i'm now getting the same mpg as the camry. i have access cab/auto. i love it. i don't have the need to have a v6 and with gas prices jumping up like crazy during summer/hurriacain season, i wanted the best mpg i can find in a truck.

if mpg is what you after, go for 2.7. plus, maintanance is easier on a 2.7. you can get to the spark plugs easeir. there is a lot more room to work under the hood with a 2.7 then v6.

2.7 Access cab 2wd. It has 3 times the power of my last 1 ton vehicle.:) It is a big 4. I got the 5 speed thinking that it just wouldn't be good to have an automatic but I never actually test drove an automatic. It depends on what you need the truck for. If you don't need to tow a lot you don't need the 6 in my opinion, but if you like power more than mpg get the 6. 4 cyl is harder to find, but not hard to find. Most Tacomas around here are 4wd access cabs so most are sixes. When I went to buy my truck some little kid salesman told me they didn't make 4 cylinder trucks anymore. They definitely want to sell you a 6. I had to wait a week or so for my truck but they found one.

I agree I have tired both and noticed no difference. I used both for 5 tanks in a row just make sure the engine was totally using either reg. or premium. I did notice a "Hole" in my wallet after I used premium though!

Get the V6 if you gonna tow anything...just makes towing easier and smoother...IMO!

19% 2.7's

Thanks for all your responses.
Whenever I see a Tacoma up in the wilds of Ontario, it always seems to be a V6 4x4. That is all my dealer has on the lot! I expect to do some seeking to get my 2.7 SR5 5 speed manual. Even on the used market ( www.autotrader.ca or www.canadatrader.com ) there are very few 2.7's. I waited 5.5 months for vibe to be built by NUMMI and won't wait that long again for them to build a Tacoma!

This will be my first truck. The kids are gone so we can justify the reduced passenger space of an access cab.
My perspective on trucks have been what I could beg and borrow. 4 cyl nissans and toyotas from my friends, my dad had straight 6 cyl full size chevys and ford rangers. No rocket ships among them!
So the 2.7 sounds like it would more than fill the bill for us.

IF YOU GO TO THE DEALER

BE SURE TO WRITE ON THE CONTRACT THEY WILL GIVE YOU A LOANER CAR UNTIL YOU GET YOUR TACOMA. despite the 3 to 4 days delivery the seller keep telling me, I had to wait 2 month to get a 2wd 4cyl manual truck in Quebec. They never gave a phuck about me after I signed the contract, I was able to make do something with the 3 to 4 days delivery but when it changed to 2 month (after signature... of course), I WAS PISSED and then never gave me a loaner.

by the way, right now in Canada (march 2006), no 4 cyl manual 2wd truck are available (any colors, any options)
