What is up with the SMALL TAIL LIGHTS ?

All manufacturers, INCLUDING TOYOTA, are gearing towards smaller tail lights.

Being a 1980s child, I love big lights and I am not getting them anywhere.
All Toyota cars have small lights in the back.. and more METAL. I am not happy with that.

Check out the 2006 Accord and Civic......... God what have they done to the Accord.... Could the new Civic's lights be any smaller? I want to take the designer, ship him to the Tora Bora mountains for a few months....

It is bad enought that the manufacturers are taking the "manual transmissions" and "conventional engines" AWAY from me, I also have to put up with the SMALLER lights too now...
Am I alone in this predicament ??

hey hey, 80s music rocks...i love sting!

i agree about the brighter bulbs and all that. But i think it's just the styling trrend...they'll come around again eventually.

i remember how in one of MJs short movies..i think moonwalker--where he turned into a robot...gotta love the car in there..head lights from one side of the car to the other..i forget the rear lights

I agree RAV4EVER, I remember the huge full-width taillights. I really miss them...it seems like all taillights look the same these days (triangular). I'm also not a fan of the clear lens taillights with a small red lens...it looks kind of tacky.

Maybe the manufactures found out that metal in the rear keeps people alive a lot better than plastic in the event of a wreck. Since you like the 80's stuff does that mean you still listen to disco? Hadda ask, sorry...
There is metal there! Have you ever looked inside of your trunk before?
Disco was dead by 1980.

Btw, I listen to 80s metal and hard rock and no, I don't have a mullet. :) I'm not even an 80s kid (born in '84, but the 90s is my generation), but I can't stand rock music today.

So this is more a matter of opinion in styling.

I neither agree nor disagree on today's small taillights, whether functional or aesthetic. But keep this in mind, that a taillight cluster is usually very pricey (especially to replace in the event of a crash). So obviously the bigger it is, the more costly it will be, since ultimately you're using more materials to produce one.

And it's not like the current Camry's taillights (for example) is any smaller than gen3's taillights, in fact it's bigger or around the same size when you compare them. And the Gen3 LE's middle taillight section is not a real taillight (except for the 2 extra brake lights embedded into it). And obviously Toyota excluded the middle piece for gen3.5, probably because it's just costly.

Besides, ultimately if the taillights do their jobs so nobody who's blind or otherwise inattentive will smash into your car, isn't that more important than styling alone?

Im sure that part of the reason is repair cost. The more expensive it is to repair the body after an accident, the more expensive it is to insure.
I think Ren is also correct. Brighter taillight and the use of projector beam taillight lenses make them brighter, so they dont need to be as big.

Generation 1 Camry (1983-1986 roughly) - Had large rectagular tail lights that covered almost the whole back except the license plate area. Same with the HATCHBACK version they had back then.

Generation 2 Camry (1987-1991) - Again had large rectagular tai lights with round corners this time.

Generation 3 Camry (1992-006) - 1992, 1993 and 1994 Camry lights were extended all through the back. Since 1995 we are seeing the smaller light trend.

We know about Gen 4 and 5.

Lights big or small, if somebody wants to CAN u from the back, they will. As far as styling is concerned, I think majority of the people don't mind smaller lights hence the latest trend........ The current Accord tail lights were making the car look "bulky" according to critics so the change was made.

It is the aftermarket companies that produce those clear lense tail lights for EVERY SINGLE car, even for a Ford Tempo, have destroyed its "charm" originally started by the Lexus ES300.

I still don't like it even when the manufacturer does it. The '06 Mercury Mountaineer and Ford Fusion will have clear tail lenses as well (although the Fusion still has a decent amount of red). I'd much prefer the entire thing stay red.

Although, aftermarket altezzas look much worse than the manufacturer ones.

What I don't understand is when cars have large rear lenses, but only a small part of it lights up when you step on the brakes. Examples are 90s BMWs and Volvos, but most car companies produce some models like that. For 3 series BMWs- they have tail lamps that are the size of a dvd case, but only a small portion of that lights up when you step on the brakes.

Why not have the whole red portion light up when you step on the brakes? Even 97-99 ES300s have this problem. Only the upper outside bulbs light up when you step on the brakes. The others may go on with the headlamps, but why couldn't they design it so more than one red area lights up when you step on the brake. To me this is poor design. :-(
