What is your Avalon's typical highway mileage and what year was your Avalon made?

I have a 1995 Avalon and I am typically seeing around 28 miles per gallon on the highway. The highest I have ever seen was 31.6 mpg (vacation highway driving) and today's fill-up put its fuel economy at 28.8 mpg. I am almost exclusively doing highway driving. Prior to recently, the maintaince of the car was in my parent's care and its fuel economy on one vacation was about 23 mpg, so the maintaince has had a significant effect on fuel economy.

For comparsion purposes, would everyone who owns an Avalon please share what model it is and what their fuel economy is on the highway?

Also a 95 Avalon. 216,000 miles.

26 MPG on the highway (almost constant 80mph) with mid-grade.
29.5 MPG on the highway (almost constant 80mph) with premium
32MPG on the highway (mothers driving 65-70) with premium

Those numbers were achieved at around the 200,000 mile mark with the origional denso iridium plugs.

I was under the impression that the Avalon came with Nickel Spark Plugs (either from NGK or Denso, depending on supplies). Did your Avalon come with Iridium spark plugs or did you switch the spark plugs to the Denso Iridium Spark Plugs after you brought it?

For anyone who is curious what 8-9 liters / 100 km is in miles per gallon, I did the calculations to convert it:

(1 / (9 * 0.264172051)) * 100 * 0.621371192 = 26.1349538

That states that 9 liters per 100 km is approximately equal to 26 mpg.

(1 / (8 * 0.264172051)) * 100 * 0.621371192 = 29.4018231

That states that 8 liters per 100 km is approximately equal to 29.4 mpg.

We bought the car at 144,000 miles from a doctor and his wife and have their complete set of maintenence records (they only took it to the dealer) and the plugs (or a tune up) were never listed as being done. Only one timing belt change and oil/oil filter changes were done. I remember my Dad pulling the plugs when we got the car and saying that they were old, but were not worn. They still wern't worn when they were replaced at a little over 205,000 miles.

Maybe they changed the type of plugs when they slightly redesigned the engine?

Are you sure that the spark plugs that you removed from the car were IK-20 Denso Iridium Spark Plugs?

If you are, then I fear that I paid $12.99 plus taxes per spark plug for 6 spark plugs and an additional $180 for the labor to install them at 77,000 miles when I already had 6 still good NGK Iridium Spark Plugs.

They were indeed. In fact, they are in a plastic bag hanging in the garage because they were still in such good condition that we wern't about to throw them out.

'00 Avalon mileage

My 2000 is getting around 24 MPG on the highway. I drive around 75 MPH, so based on what the rest of you are saying, I think it may need a tune up. It has 162K miles on it. I just bought this one because at 260K miles, my '96 Avalon was still going strong when I sold it!

What are the best plugs/gap to get the best fuel mileage/performance out of my 2000?

Thanks!

You will want to install Iridium Spark plugs from either NGK or Denso. You will also want to replace the air filter, fuel filter and pcv valve as well as checking the various fluids in the vehicle.

Avalons come with Denso 3253 (dual ground platinums @ about $7.50 each), which are very good plugs, but not Iridiums. If it's running Iridiums someone else put them in.

Unbelievably good mileage

My Avalon is an 06 XL, and from the beginning (I had to finish its breakin on a highway trip, doing the alternating speed thing) it has gotten unbelievably good mileage:

32-33 at 75 mph

This is the best I've EVER gotten from a car, from VW bug to Saab 99 to Maverick, Mustang, Cutlass wagon, Chevelle (ugh), Neon, Voyager, and 01 Camry. And it's easily the biggest (except for maybe the Cutlass).

And it's using regular unleaded. The dealer said that a better grade of gas would get better mileage, but after very careful testing under highway conditions, tank to tank, gallon to gallon there is I have found there to be no difference at all.

I have a 98 Avalon and get around 18 miles mixed highway and local driving. A couple of years ago I went into Valvoline drive in oil change. They have a machine where they clean out the pistons. This brought me back to 22 miles per gallon. I am thinking of doing it again this winter.
Have you ever considered using fuel injector cleaner?

Pay Toyota to check it out. With the potential increase in miles to the gallon that you SHOULD be averaging you could really recoup the money -- unless you bad milage comes from the way you drive.
