87 and have tried back to back tanks of 93 and could tell no difference. Runs about $4 more a tank for premium over regular.

I use 89. Not sure why, guess I feel that I'm not wasting my money on premium if it's not needed. But I don't like to be just "regular". I'm sure 87 is just fine. I'm sure there may be an advantage to using premium as well. If there wasn't, why would they produce different grades? And why would Toyota "recommend" but not "require" using 91 for maximum performance? I use Shell (unless I'm outta gas and there's no other choice) and like someone already said the V-power is like 22 cents more than regular while plus is only 10. I can live with that. I regularly get 19-20 miles per gallon so "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

.:. I don't want to even mention synthetic oil but I can't help it .:.

After switching to synthetic sometime in October, I hope to get 20-21 mpg. That's it, no more. You can have your thread back. :thankyou:

I am starting out with premium, I think it is 93 at my normal gas station. After awhile I will drop to 87 and see if I notice any difference. I had a big truck before this one that got me 9.5 mpg/city so I have no problem spending the extra dough to see if it really matters on my Tacoma. In my past vehicles, I never noticed anything, but I figured I would give it a try with premium on this vehicle from the very beginning to see if mileage and perfomance are really affected much when I drop to 87.

We have 85 here in the high-altitudes and it runs fine on that but I, normally, put in 87. (No difference in power or mpg between 85, 87, or 91 for my Taco)

87 was at $2.29 the other day.....let's starting getting some that Iraqi oil all the Bush-haters promised us!!

Yeah I feel the same way about using 87 in my truck.

I'm still trying different octanes. Will submit an opinion in a couple of months.

I used ...

:smokin: 93 when truck was new, now have 10,000 miles went to 89. NO Difference AT ALL!

Now I will mix every other tank between 89 and 87. In the past when gas was going to unleaded it was stated that mixing two grades gives you better octane than just filling with a single grade. I make sure there is still around 5 gallons and then buy the other grade.

I don't see any difference with this method! The only time I WILL put in premium is when I'm towing something heavy on the highway!

I was using 91, but with the price of gas recently, I've started using 89, still runs fine, and I can't see a difference in power or milage.
