Im just wodnering if anyonelse is as curious as me to why the non-4x4 models get the name "Prerunner", but the 4x4 models arent called anything special??? Thats like ford making a mustang V6 called the "Pre-GT" and calling the V8 just "mustang". ya know? Anyway, what would you guys think would be a cool name for the Tacoma 4x4 models? Obviously 4 runner is taken......so what else woudl work?

good stuff.....maybe the "Post-runner"?? haha. I like the Trekker!

I just keep noticing like a million tacoma prerunners everywhere (old and new). They even offer them the TRD packages, just wish the 4x4 models had a special model name too.

Well a prerunner is term for a vehicle to used "prerun" an off-road race. The idea is that "prerunning" a race course in a 2wd truck before the real race will help to better identify areas that may prove troublesome. So maybe the 4x4's should be called the Toyota "Race Day, Game Day, Whatever You Wanna Call It, Real Mans, Trophy Winning, Not Just Some Poser Wanna Be Prerunner, More Capable Then Yours, Look Ma I Made It Though That Mess The Prerunner Couldn't" Truck. If I owned a prerunner I'd debadge the prerunner tags. It just advertises it's lack of capability when compared to the 4x4. Nothing screams middle of the road capability like a prerunner tag.

Ooooo Man, I can't wait for the Prerunner crowd to read that.;) ..

Or it advertizes the fact that I live in Florida which is flat and have no need for 4x4, and since I am not compensating for a small penis I don't mind driving 2wd.

yeah i'm a prerunner guy, so there.

btw j/k- i like your name too.. HAHAHA

Pre Runners kick ass, people that have the 4x4 probably dont even use it...... I see it this way stance of a 4x4 and looks of a 4x4 but no need for the 4x4 plus i have the locker in case i do get semi stuck.

If there was a black sand pearl access cab 4x4 on the lot when i was looking for my truck and i couldnt wait beacuse i need a vehicle i would have got the 4x4.

WAAAA HA HA HA HA that was funny. Pre-Runner is great for people who will never use the 4x4 but want it for the looks.... Great for some... not me as I'd get stuck.

I havent gotten stuck so far. And i follow my buddy on some mean trails with his 98 4x4 tacoma. So id say the pre runner stance helps out and the RR helps too. I see more and more tricked out pre runners in my part of town.

No back to the subject a name for the 4x4 tacomas.........

why would a pre runner be less capable? a 4x4 w/o a locker is spinning 2 tires, a prerunner w/ a locker is spinning 2 tires. also, a pre runner has a higher power to weight ratio, as well as a more balanced weight distrubution. Also, ever notice more off road race trucks are 2wd? Yes, 4x4 is great for snow or mud, but i would not going around calling a prerunner a crappy truck

^ I agree. I have an SR5 4x4 with an open diff. Guys with 2wd's and lockers go the same places I go and then some.

This is something I have never understood. Why offer an open diff on any 4x4 is beyond me. I mean, I understand no locker up front cause folks would be breaking CV joints all day long. But, the lack of a rear locker on a 4X4 is blasphemous imo. q

Didn't say crappy... he said "less capable", which you admitted yourself (i.e. mud and snow)

We can get back to the topic any time now...

Drive one and you'll find out. Without weight in the back the wheels can spin very easy. Also when climbing hills or driving through mud and such having the front wheels pulling you over a crest or through a bog makes a huge difference. Not to mention low range and gearing. Also most off-road race trucks are 4x4 not 2x4, there are 2x4 race trucks but most race in less presitgious 2x4 classes. Check out any CORR result if you don't believe me, 4x4's can turn faster, accelerate much faster, and flat out run much faster times. And no a prerunner is not a crappy truck, it was a joke, no one said they were.
