When does your Low Fuel Indicator come on?

My gas gauge needle just hit the bar/line under the 1/4 full mark and my Low Fuel Indicator came on. Every other car I've owned, the Low Fuel Indicator didn't come on until the needle was just about to hit Empty. I was surprised it came on so soon. So I pulled in to fill up and it took 14.4 gallons, which means I had about 4 gallons left. Is this what everyone else is experiencing?

1/8 tank and 30-40 miles left on range on trip meter.

Takes 14.1-14.6 gallons at that point.

I drive until on Empty with 0 miles on range and the most I have put in has been 16.13 gallons.

Absolutely.

It seems to be getting more common these days -- the 2004 Honda Accord I traded for my Camry was pretty similar, with the low fuel light coming on much earlier than I've ever seen before.

I did my best to scare the bejeezus out of myself and run my Camry out of gas a month or so ago, and here's pretty much what I discovered:

Again, as everyone is reporting, the low fuel light will come on with about 14.5 gallons burned, and thus about four gallons still in the 18.5-gallon tank.

With my XLE's multi-function display, the "cruising range" display will get down to zero pretty near the point where the fuel gauge hits the "E" mark. There are still about two gallons in the tank at this point.

The bottom line is even when the car is screaming at you that it's out of gas, as the fuel gauge drops below "E" very quickly after initially getting there, you've still probably got more than a full gallon in the tank. You could really consider the "E" mark as being a whole lot more like the "low fuel" light in previous cars you've owned -- you've still got a couple of gallons in the tank, and plenty of time to get to a gas station, unless you're waaay out in the sticks and far from civilization.

This is from the Quick reference guide from Toyota:

How much fuel do I have left when the warning light goes on???

When your Toyota's low fuel warning light goes on you have about 2-5 gallons of fuel left. Do no let your new Toyota run out of gas, because it may damage the catalytic converter.WARNING:not all models have low fuel warning lights. Keep an eye on the fuel gauge.

dont let it run low in general.
when your fuel tank stays empty there is more chance condensation can develop which isnt good.
moreover, your fuel pump tends to have to work harder as there is less fuel and so the air pressure/weight isnt there to help push the gas through the pipes as easily.
when the light goes on you should fill up immediately, why let it run so low anyways?

my gen4's light turns off and on in city when the needle is right above E. or even before that if i im on an incline. It stays on when the needle is well into the E. Ive only done that once as an observation, but i dont plan on doing it again on purpose.

Oh, I don't think we're talking about routinely taking it down as low as it can go -- we're doing more in the way of "comparing notes" so that we'll know what to expect should we get into a situation when we get that low on a tank. That's what I was doing with my little "experiment" to figure out what was going on down at the very bottom of the tank. And, I basically found that even though I thought I was dangerously low on gas, I really had about two gallons still in the tank -- essentially giving me virtually a good 50 miles or so on the highway to find a gas station.

So, now I have a very good idea of the actual number of miles I can drive when the "low fuel" light comes on -- they might as well call it the "quarter of a tank left" light. And, even when the XLE's "cruising range" display gets to "zero," I know that I've still got at least a couple of gallons in the tank, and then some -- there's still plenty of time in any halfway-populated stretch of freeway to find a gas station. But, I don't routinely take it lower than that!
