When to do first oil change?

Hello! I’m new here and a first time Toyota buyer after taking delivery on our 2020 Highlander a few weeks ago. Also the first time I’ve purchased a car with complementary maintenance, which leads to my question. Our Highlander was manufactured in March 2020 but we took delivery November 2020. How are the dealers going to want to approach the first oil change? It seems to me like it’s due for an oil change in March 2021 since the oil will be at its 12-month mark, but will the service department balk at that and point to my November 2020 purchase as the beginning of the car’s “life?”

I'd just change it myself, whether it's 500 or 1000 miles (or for some members 5000 miles), personally I wouldn't let the initial fill sit there for 10K miles.

You can also consider buying the OE filter and oil from the dealer to have the documentation, but Walmart should have Toyota filters these days and jugs of Mobil-1 or Castrol Edge synthetic oils.

When i took possession of my new vehicle...it had 6 kms on the gauge. I gently drove around town till about 975kms and took it back to dealer to do an engine oil and filter change.......using the 0W20 synthetic oil. That should remove the very fine metal and whatever pieces during the break in period.

Howdy,
I believe the new vehicle engine blocks doesn't have those impurities mentioned 10 or more years ago.
But, yes to each own and I agree; it's much cheaper to change engine oil vs the engine itelself.
As per new 0-20 is very thin and good for new engines due to its viscosity, it can be replace 10k Km (6k miles) or once a year.
Dealers usually stick with above said schduale (for the COMPLIMENTRY maintenance) nothing free my Friend@
Cheers!

Your last statement is the root of my question, really. We can all debate when it’s right to change oil on a new engine, but I’ve never had a maintenance plan like Toyota Care before to know how dealers handle it. If I had walked into a Toyota service department for a Toyota Care oil change in December with 1,000 miles and the car being 9 months since build, would they have given me trouble?

My Highlander has 1,400 miles on it and was a March 2020 build, so it seems like this is a good time for its first complimentary oil change to hit both the manual’s prescribed 12 month change and also the new engine early oil change recommendation.

Newly manufactured components can cleaned and flushed but moving parts do break in and oil picks this up. Think of why cylinder walls are honed.

The OEM has done a lot of testing for adequate durability standards in establishing these maintenance guidelines. In my opinion, as an automotive engineer, an early first oil change and more frequent oil changes keeping the oil cleaner benefits longer engine life -- supported by results from cars I have kept long term.

However, if you don't plan to keep more than 10 years, 200,000 miles then this becomes less critical.

BTW, 1000 miles, initial oil change:

When buying new vehicles my preference is an oil change at 1500 miles; the below sample is at 1700 miles. I submit the oil to Blackstone Laboratories for analysis. On the sample sheet you will see the engine is listed as a 3.3L V-6 although I believe I marked the sample as a 2.5L L4. I intend to sample next at 3K miles, then at 5K miles and 5K thereafter.

Any ideas on what the book says for 2023 2.4t? What is the standard oil change interval? Is there a break-in/first oil change interval that different than the regular interval? Any ideas on what type of oil Toyota is use from the factory? I'm coming from a Subaru. The school of though on that brand was change on the 6000mile interval. Do not do a break-in oil change prior as the factory oil was a high Moly formula from the factory. You wanted to keep the high Moly oil in there for the first 6000miles.

You can look at manuals here.

The 2023 gas model is using 0W-20 with a "normal" interval of 10,000 miles. Many people don't wait anywhere near that long to change it. The free Toyota Care that you would get with the car covers a free oil change at 10K and 20K. You can do it sooner yourself or the dealer will do it at your cost. Toyota doesn't use break-in oil.
