Hi,
I have a 98 Camry LE 4 Cyclinder Jap Edition. My check engine light came on recently and I wanted to know where is the OBDII located. I am about to purchase the scan tool from ebay and wasnt sure where to stick the connector to? I removed the fuse cover and the coin box on the driver left side but do not see any connectors? Do I need to remove the entire console/cover below the steering wheel?

Well the mystery of the missing OBD2 port is starting to clear up. This comment is for the benefit of any of you following my path of trying to acquire mint Camrys fromn the 97-01 era, arguably one of the best camrys ever. JDM cars from that time period don't have USA OBD 2 ports per se. I did talk to a mechanic in CA who has a shop for these vehicles. There isn't one. There is a small box behind the L side of the engine which is labeled" diagnosis". The mechanic said you can jumper two of the contacts and do the old school way of counting the CEL flashes on the dash which is what I have to do with my 94 dodge PU with no OBD2 either. A shame because I have a modern scan tablet which reads Live Data. Oh well. I have gotten spoiled looking at live data like 02 sensor, injector functions and the like. I guess I will just drive the beast and don't worry until I see a CEL

What that means is that your JDM Camry came with DLC (diagnostic logic control), Toyota's "OBDI" which pre-dated the more or less universal OBDII.
No scan tablet is required with DLC, all you need is a paperclip to short the terminals labelled "TE1" and "E1" and then turn the key on and count the number of times the "check engine" light blinks. The result is then looked up on a list of 2 digit codes in the repair manual.

Thanks 356. Now I know which terminals to short out. I have no CEL, I just wanted to scan it for live data but this will be an old school car and I am an old school mechanic. I am doing a post on the pros and cons of getting a JDM car imported. It will be long but if I can post it it will be useful. I could have used such advice before I did it. I wouldn't do it again at least with the guys I bought the car from. Japanese I MO are honest. These guys weren't. Used car salesmen the world over have a bad reputation.
