Why are Camrys considered "slow"?

Why does it seem that everyone thinks Camrys are slow cars? I've been looking at other "Tuner" cars in the price range of Camrys, Civics, eclipse's Exc. And I saw that for the V6 Camry has a good 40-60 HP on almost all of them. So what makes Camrys so slow? Or is it there not that slow ppl just never consider Camrys as fast cars. To make a Camry very fast it would be cheaper then most other cars because camrys have the v6 something that allot of other tuners don't have(For the price), then turbo or S/C the V6.

Excuse me if anything is incorrect.

^ Bingo. The V6 Camry weighs around 3,250lbs for a third generation. Similar year Civic's weigh over 1,000lbs less than that. That and the fact that they're automatic only which kills a lot of the power being put to the ground. Camry's are NOT fast car, and they aren't very good tuning cars either. Why? Because there is a tiny aftermarket for them. The 1MZFE isn't the best engine in the world for modding either. Obviously there are people out there making pretty good power out of them but it's not going to be as cheap as making a Civic fast.

Would I rather have a Civic then my Camry though? HELL NO!

Just to put this out there you apparently don't know that you could get a 4wd GSX Eclipse with the 4G63 that is already turbo'ed. As in the 4G63 in the Lancer Evo. As in a lot of power in a small package. You can also replace the internals on the stock T-25 turbo with the T-28 internals and have about 70more HP, providing you upgrade fuel, etc. etc.

Exactly. The Camry is usually driven by folks who value quality and reliability over the absolute over the edge performance of a nervous high end car. Why would you trash a wonderfully designed piece of engineering?

The driver of the "other" brand... he/she will trash their vehicle and two years later, they're trading it in.

Not that Im an Altima Fan, but they can burn Gen3-3.5 V6 Camrys pretty easy......
I had a 2001 5 speed Altima for a brief moment and that thing blew the doors off of most other Japanese cars as well as alot American ones!!
........the car is a POS though:lol: , Id much rather have a slower Camry!!

The 5sfe Camry is slow. Period. The V6 Camry was actually VERY respectable for its day.............and can hold its own today too, as long as there is no sludge! Oooooh I went there! ;)

p.s. There is no way a 3.5 Altima (or Maxima for that matter) couldn't pass a gen 3 V6 Camry carrying 4 peeps and subs.........if they were really trying. I want to say a gen 3 V6 is capable of 8 sec 0-60. A V6 Altima is low 6's......plus is has a 5-speed AT, and at freeways speeds it is fast as heck.

it was he was fuking with me or some sh!t. i was in and out of traffic and he did the same. most of time he could of passed me. he had the bling bling rims on it too.. but whatever, i had fun... win or lose, to me its about having fun with friends...

maximas are very quick when compared to the camry, throw in a manual and u havnt got a chance. especially with 4 people and subs, ur lookin at a car that weighs at or slightly over 4000lbs and has 150whp...ut not beating a 3.5 anything. but iguess u cant really call passing u in traffic racing. my buddy used to do that and all he did was keep teh faster car behind him by closing gaps the other car could have made. which is easy when ur in front.

idk...i've taken a few ricers on with my AT 5SFE..pulled up to a stoplight and this civic wit a fartcan pulls up and revs..i go into N andstart revvin...pushin 6k rpm...light turns green...we bopth get goin but im freewheelin for a good 3 seconds...once i get my grip i pass his ass up and laugh as he keeps tryin...i kno he was prolly rnnin stock but made mfeel goo that i smoked a kitted-ricer-looking civic..

Well to be blunt, Camry is basic transportation for families, the proverbial family car, there is no other way to put it really. They were not meant to be fast from the factory. If a person wanted a fast Toyota then they had to buy a Supra Turbo, MR2 Turbo or Celica GT-S.

The 5SFE Camrys are slower than molasses in January, no doubt about it. (Sure that the 18 inch chrome wheels on mine don't help at all.) In fact the only car I have owned that was slower was my 1995 Geo Metro 3 cylinder.

There are guys that put tons of money into a Camry and get 300 WHP and my hat is off to them for the effort. But I'd rather start off with a cheap car already fast from the factory like an LS1 Camaro or 4G63 Eclipse (or anything with boost) and make it even faster.

Because it's 4 doors, automatic, FWD and heavy as hell. Those combined makes it a family sedan. Family Sedan =/= Fast car. The Coupe V6 has a tiny more respect but it's spawned from a 4dr 4cyl, (the norm for a 3rd gen camry.)
That's just my area (Bay Area/San Jose) when you see a camry you know the guys is either at least over 39 and has family, or one dumb ass wannabe-ricer.

tC or Celica is the current Toyota sport line up, but the Celica has recently/also been pulled off/discontinued. I miss the days where Toyota's whole line up was Sport Inspired. Supra, Celica, and Corolla. :disappoin
