Wind Noise Even at Lower Speed

Just got my LE last week and i had high expectations for the quietness of cabin noise as i've seen many car reviewers bragged about.

I had a 2010 Corolla LE and i am used to the road noise coming out from an economy compact car. So i figured a Venza would be a much quieter ride. Well, turned out i was wrong, partly. The road noise in the Venza is far more superior than the Corolla but the wind noise is horrible. I don't think i have had a wind noise as such in the Corolla in the past 11 years.

The wind noise is coming from the driver's door/window. It is not as noticeable at lower speed (below 45mph) but it gets worse when i get to the freeway. I was not allowed to take the car to the freeway when i test drove it because the sales person said that's the dealership's policy.

I plan to take it back to the dealership on the weekend and see what they have to say. I'm just not sure if this is how it's supposed to be or is it just me being bad luck. I found quite a few videos complaining about wind noise in the new Highlander as well.

Is anyone else having the same issue?

I will drive it tomorrow and let you know, I never noticed it too much. Compared to the Rav4 I am upgrading from, it is much quieter overall. I know the single vs dual pane glass does make a difference. I have read/heard wind noise is a drawback on the new Venza though. And I can see why too given the slanted design for aero.

That is weird your dealership didnt let you take it on a freeway, they is a red flag for me instantly. Every dealership I have ever been to, they have a mapped out course typically which takes you on a range of city and highway. These last couple times (due to covid), they gave me the keys and said have fun. That's weird for sure.

Coming from 2008 Wrangler soft top it’s great :) but did notice a slight difference with the stargaze liner closed. Comparing it to a 2018 GLC300 it’s pretty good. Not sure about the LE but would think it’s similar may be better with the 18” tires. I test drove the XLE for about an hour but ended up with the Limited (without test driving it) and did notice a slight difference after taking delivery I just assume its the stargaze roof.

Maybe that salesman didn’t want to spend more time on the test drive but to tell you that you can’t go on the freeway is BS. Every test drive I had was without a salesman. Some ask will if you want them to join you and some just say have at it. I would never test drive if they tell me they have to join me.

Every dealership is different. When shopping for brand new cars in this area, the salesperson always accompanies you regardless of brand. When shopping pre-owned cars, most dealers around here will just toss you the keys and let you have at it. In the past 30 years, I have never had a dealer allow a test drive of a brand new car unaccompanied. However, most also encourage highway driving so hearing a dealer not allow highway driving is very unusual.

We came from a 2020 Volvo XC60 that had terrible wind noise in the driver and passaenger windows past 50mph plus extremely loud 2.0 motor. Wind noise is 90% better in the Venza, still do hear a little but not much. Now I do hear some road noise but I think it is from the hard Bridgestone tires. Not sure if they are that hard to increase gas mileage or just the way they are but I would prefer a softer, quieter compound.

Search forum and Google...the ECOPIA tires are lousy and do contribute a lot to road noise. Switched mine (like many users have done). I'm on Michelins Cross Climate 2 now and huge difference in noise, handling and ride. Same with the Michelin snows I mounted for winter.

I don't have any wind noise issues, th8e window most likely needs to be adjusted...

A couple of things. Any dealer who won't let you test drive the vehicle where you want, and even let you take it on a extended drive, isn't a good dealer. Maybe you just had a bad sales person, IDK. The car is quiet and aerodynamic so you will hear some wind noise, most pronounced is from the outside mirrors. What you are describing is the drivers outside mirror wind noise.

For these and other reasons everyone who is considering purchasing any vehicle should always take a thorogh test drive, even overnight if you think its necessary. One should always be sure the vehicle meets all expectations. This avoids a lot of surprises and buyers remorse. Ten minutes on a "route" isn't enough time to evaluate a vehicle, hell its not enough time to evaluate a new pair of shoes.

FWIW, I I also thought I heard wind noise sounds at highway speeds and wasn't happy about it but always thought it was the outside mirrors causing most of it. They are really quite large. But about 2 weeks ago put on Toyota brand window visors and am convinced they helped reduce any noise. They look awesome also and are of very high quality. Win, win in my book.

To anyone reading this thread, I wanted to point out that Toyota have a vehicle rental program at many of their dealerships. I rented a Venza for 4 days prior to purchasing, because I wanted a hassle-free evaluation that included day, night; fast, slow; shopping, and general 'everyday use'. $200 well spent. I would laugh at any dealership that told me I couldn't take the car on the freeway, or wouldn't let me drive it alone. I once remember a salesperson coming in the car with me; he talked incessantly despite my asking him to shut up, and he really wanted to show off the sound system, which I had no interest in (and masks the noise issues!). Never again. Covid has helped in this regard!

Other possible sources of noise - roof racks; mine came with them; I took them off; not sure if that helped or not.

Door edge-guards - my car came with them, and they were huge - stuck out a few mm. I removed them; still not sure if it helped or not.

Seat cooling - huge source of noise that sounds just like outside wind noise.

Outside mirrors - great suggestion about folding them in, and testing. I will try that on my next long drive!

roof crossbars will definitely add wind noise and lower your MPG, on any car. No ideal about window deflectors. Your rental idea was a good one.

Multiple reviews including Alex on Autos & this long-distance road trip review from MotorTrend called out the wind noise; noise is not necessarily a subjective measure as Alex on Auto compares the decibels to other cars on the same road at the same speed (50mph). I have test driven 3 Venza's and have not pulled the trigger specifically because of the wind noise...as others have said, replacing the OEM tires can help but at this rate, I'll wait around for the next-gen NX to see what that looks like because the noise is just too excessive for my personal taste. I don't expect a Lexus LS/Mercedes S-class level of tomb quietness but nonetheless it is still below par...

I noticed the wind, but I think it is the mirrors causing the noise. I can live with it. My normal ride is a 1967 VW Bug so noise is no problem with the Venza.

It's interesting to read alternative views on possible wind noise. We've driven our Venza Limited for close to 3000 miles, including a 2000 mile road trip, and I have not noticed any significant wind noise. On certain road surfaces, there is tire noise, but never any wind noise unless there is a substantial cross-breeze blowing, where I did hear some intermittent noise with the wind gusts.

I am in a similar situation as you or maybe I am not used to stepping up to a "luxury" SUV. I am coming from a previous gen Rav4 Hybrid and the Venza is way, way more quiet. Yes road noise from tires definitely could be better but that is a tire issue and Toyota opting to use harder rubber, low rolling fuel economy saving tires.

Or it could be those vehicles experiencing the wind noise do not have the windshield aligned correctly so it is creating some noise.

I do have a whining noise as I'm slowing to a stop. happens every time when I'm slowing to a stop.
This is the sound of your MG2 electric motor spining down to a stop. It is geared (11.94 gear ratio) to the front wheels. This is a high speed motor with a maximum rpm of 17,000 rpm if I recall correctly. I love the sound of this motor! For me it epitomizes driving a hybrid vehicle with the Toyota Synergy drive.

Did you find out anything? I’m having the same issue in my limited, the dealer is saying can’t replicate ……..

A little update on what's been going on with my Venza LE. I took it back to the dealership, twice.

Here's what happened the first time: I drop off the car and after a few hours, the tech called and said there was nothing wrong. There was no leakage and the noise is just the turbulence effect from normal driving. They test drove another unit on site and found similar noise. At that point i thought to myself okay, let me try to live with this for the next 36 months. Took it for an hour road trip of mostly freeway driving on the following weekend and the turbulence was causing so much discomfort in my ears. It's also causing pressure to build up in my ears along the some parts of the road which i don't experience in other car on the some route. After the trip, i decided to do some troubleshooting with tricks found online:
  1. Tried the weather strip (D-shaped) around the door and extended to the back door and it didn't help
  2. Folded the side mirror back while driving and it did not change anything
  3. Taped around window and door with paint tape, nothing changed
  4. Taped the seams on the side mirror, nothing changed
  5. Window seals are all intact.
  6. Tried using cabinet door bumpers as vortex generator, as seen on Youtube. Placed multiple bumpers in different location of the side mirror, not much luck
  7. I did a 'Dollar Bill' test on the door seal and the bill came out pretty easily. I did it to all 4 doors and all came out with not much resistance.
  8. Tried ordering the window visor set but it is backordered nationwide.
I contact the general manager of the dealership and told him about my experience. He invited me to stop by the dealership the second time. Went for a test drive with a tech so we can both experience the turbulence effect. What's interesting is that even before we started the drive, the tech already knew what to expect of the issue. He said i am not the first one with this problem. Apparently the Venza and the new Highlander are known for this, as pointed out by the tech. Anyway, we still went for a drive and the tech agreed that the turbulence is pretty bad. He said that there's currently no remedy for the problem , the best they can do is to file a complaint with Toyota and they 'might' send someone to come and ride with me in the car to experience the problem. I also drove another XLE on site and found similar noise.

So in the end, i returned the Venza.

p/s: Tolerance of noise is subjective so what bothers me might not be a problem for you. I like the car a lot to be honest, the ride is smooth, seats are comfortable, great mpg. If it wasn't for the noise, i would definitely keep the car.

Just going thru this thread. This is kind of odd. It no different than any other SUV. Wind noise is better than almost all SUVs I rode in recent years, including 2012 RX350, 2018 Honda Odyssey, 2016 CRV, frankly even Tesla Model Y. Again I haven't ran into any crosswind situations, so I don't know about that.

Tire noise on other hand bothersome for me, so I replaced tires with Yokohama AVID Ascent GT. Now ride is much more comfortable, and quieter on rougher Highway patches.

Is this possible Early 2021s had some kind of problem?. Seems this thread/response was from 7 months ago, and car might have been very early Venza?

I drove a 2021 Venza Limited and a 2021 RAV4 Hybrid Limited on back to back test drives. The Venza was noticeably quieter then the RAV4. There is definitely more sound deadening material in the Venza.

I believe most of the noise is coming from around the door seals. I worked in the window and door business for major manufacture for many years. One simple test we used to assure tight fits of sash to frame was the dollar bill test. You close the window/door with a dollar bill in it, pull the bill out. If you have good resistance it’s a tight seal, if you have very little it’s a poor seal. I tested my 2021 Limited, windows were A+ very tight, and door seal to frame was an F. Very poor. So now on a mission to how to correct door to frame seal.

I have the same Issue with my 2022 Venza LE. It’s funny because the adviser and the tech went for a test drive and told me that it’s there, but it’s kinda normal. Told him it’s unacceptable. He even taped up the window area and parts of the windshield (kudos to him) When I got home, I taped the surrounding windshield with a tickler blue painters tape and still the noise persists. It’s more of a mild whistling type noise. It’s definitely not a road noise (tire noise). It seems to be coming from the right front windshield/door area. Will see what they do when they get another venza in the lot to test drive.
