Wining noise in high gear

I am the second owner of a 1990 4x4 22RE with a 5 speed manual transmission. This transmission was either replaced or rebuilt by a Toyota dealer not too long before I purchased the truck. The problem is that when the transmission is in 5th gear it makes a high pitched wining noise and the more you strain the transmission the louder the noise. Any ideas? Thanks

You know, I had the same problem in 3rd and 4th gear. It would make this loud squealing noise like two gears rubbing together. The more strain I put on the drivetrain/transmission, the louder it got. Turns out it was a failed U-joint, $18.40 fix. Pull your drive shaft and move the U-joints. Although they look fine and unbroken from the first examination, they could be stiff. Mine was stiff. I could have sworn it was the transmission too. If you pull your drive shaft, don't forget to mark it so you can install it the same way.
