I’ve been unable to get either of our iPhone XS’s to charge using the pad. I push the button, which makes the green light come on, but I don’t see the “lightning bolt” appear on the iPhone. Is is maybe because our phone cases are preventing the phones from getting good contact with the charging pad ?

The thickness of the case can be an issue with wireless charging, even if the phone/case combo will lay flat in the opening and make full contact like it should. I think the chargers Toyota uses are in the 2-3 mm range. I have an Otterbox defender that is 4-5 mm thick and it doesn't work in either Highlander or Tacoma. If you look at specs for desktop chargers, they usually tell you the maximum thickness of the case that it will effectively charge through.

It probably is the case. I have an iphone 12 mini with a quadlock case which I really like to use but it would not charge in the Highlander because the case was too thick. I took the case off & it charges with no problem. I then went & bought a thinner case and this new case charges with no issues with it on tho I really do miss the functionality & protection of the quadlock case!

You wouldn’t think this is a big issue, but as everyone knows …. sometimes extracting a smart phone from its protective case can be quite a struggle. Sometimes it feels like I could damage the iPhone as I struggle to wrestle it out of the covering.

If it’s a metal case it won’t work. If it’s plastic or rubber it’ll work. I have a thick uag case and my phone worked fine. My other case spigen armor forget which off hand also worked.

It’s not so much the thickness of the case as it is if it’s a MagSafe case. Those types of cases have a metal ring embedded into the center of them. The metal MagSafe ring causes the wireless charger to error out. Find a case that is NOT MagSafe compatible and it has a better chance of working. Otherwise plug it in. 😂 Faster charging anyway.

I have to disagree a bit on that. The distance between the charger and the back surface of the phone is a huge factor in making wireless charging work. That distance is spelled out in the Qi specification. Having a case on the phone directly impacts that distance because the case now sits between the back of the phone and the charging device. There are many case manufacturers out there who do not pay close attention to the specification. I know. I have tried several. But I now have a MagSafe case and it works just fine in my HL. Its an Apple case. Go figure. I have a Mophie wireless charger at home and the only cases I could get to work with it are Apple and *Speck. Coincidentally, the ones that didn't work did not have the MagSafe ring. They were simply too thick.
